Number of single women increases in Raute community

Due to the effects of alcohol and tradition, Raute women are forced to become single at a young age. Due to excessive alcohol consumption in the community, most women remain single without having children, which is causing the population to decline.

Recently, the number of single women in the Raute community has been increasing. If we look at the statistics since 2075, 17 women in the Raute community have become single. They seem to have become single especially at a young age.

In the Raute settlement, it is not customary to get married again after getting married once. That is why Raute women who become single at a young age remain single. According to the Raute culture, it is customary to get married at a young age and not to remarry after marriage. Most women in the community get married at a young age. They became single at a young age after their husbands died after drinking too much alcohol.

Durga Khatri of the Social Service Center Sosek, who has been working in the Raute community, said that the Raute community is shrinking as the number of single women increases. 'The problem has become more complicated because women are not allowed to remarry even if they lose their husbands at a young age,' she said. 'According to the customs of the Raute community, there is no custom of remarrying after getting married once. There is a custom of getting married before menstruation, but women who have lost their husbands are forced to live alone for the rest of their lives.' According to her, there are 17 single women between the ages of 15 and 51 living in the settlement. There are 13 who get married at the age of 12 and 13 and 4 who get married at the age of 14 and 15. Out of them, there are 9 who are single at the age of 15 to 35 and 8 who are single at the age of 36 to 51.

A few years ago, 15-year-old Surman Shahi and 12-year-old Mayo Shahi got married on the same day in the community. Surman got married to 34-year-old Shivraj and Mayo got married to 32-year-old Dal Bahadur, but Shivraj and Dal Bahadur died within 6 months due to excessive alcohol consumption. The population is decreasing as most women do not have children and are single due to excessive alcohol consumption in the community. The child mortality rate has increased due to parental alcohol consumption.

According to Sosec Nepal data, 10 children and infants have died in the last three years. Health workers working in the settlement where they died say that they died due to severe malnutrition and pneumonia. The infant mortality rate has increased due to the excessive alcohol consumption by the parents since the baby was in the womb and lack of good care even at birth. 53 people from the Raute community have died since Asary 2075. Of the deaths, 25 died between 7 days and 3 years, while 27 others died.
