Subash Budha of Patarasi-7 Patmaragaun is rehabilitating youths trapped in addiction by opening a rehabilitation center in Khalanga, the headquarters of Jumla. Seven years ago, he opened an organization called Karnali Teen Challenge Drug Rehabilitation Center and is engaged in rescuing youths trapped in addiction.

His goal is to rehabilitate those suffering from mental problems due to drug and alcohol abuse. He said, ‘Nowadays, youths are trapped in addiction. Many people suffer from mental problems. No matter what happens in their rehabilitation, efforts are being made to add bricks.’ Earlier, everyone was looking down on Subash for being addicted.

32-year-old Subash fell into addiction at the age of 11. He continued to use drugs until the age of 22. He became mentally ill. The family became worried. His family did not know that he was broken. When he became mentally ill, the family finally found out. He was taken to the Teen Challenge in Lucknow, India. After spending two years in a reform center, he spent one year outside. His mental condition improved.

Subash, who was in grade 8 at Karnali Secondary School in Anamnagar and was caught in an addiction, says that he has now recovered and is involved in a campaign to reform other youth. He said, "Sometimes I kept asking my family for money to learn to drive and sometimes to record songs. I reached Kathmandu with the encouragement of my friends. The family kept giving me money. That money was invested in addiction rather than studying."

But now Subash is opening a reform center and rescuing youths who are trapped in addiction. He did not know anything because he was trapped in addiction when he was young. He quit his studies and got addicted to hashish and alcohol. ‘I became unfit to work around 2070,’ he said, ‘and my parents even sold the land so that I could teach.’ He said that at that time, his father worked in the post office and his mother opened a hotel. He also lived in the Jumla District Police Office from Kathmandu. He has the experience of being sent to detention by his family for reform.’

He tied the knot on 21 Poush 2075. Kalpana Budha of Syada, Simikot Rural Municipality, Humla married him. Currently, the Subash couple is running the reform center. They have a son and a daughter. He said, ‘I myself got addicted and reformed, so I am telling everyone my experiences.’

He said that so far, 4 women and 30 men have received services from the reform center. The reform center has a building that can accommodate up to 10 people at a time. Chandannath Municipality has built a fence. Sirak-dasna and beds have been provided. A building for the correction center has been built on 250 square meters of land. Kalpana said that she is unable to hire employees due to financial constraints. ‘If we hire employees, we don’t have the money to pay them,’ she said, ‘so we work ourselves.’

Now, patients keep calling. The correction center is not able to provide TVs, computers, and good food. They charge 10,000 rupees per patient per month. They said that they are covering the cost of medicines, water, electricity, and counselors from that amount.

So far, Chandannath Municipality has received 350,000 rupees and Guthichaur 100,000 rupees. So far, they say, they have had to keep patients for 1 month to 22 months. From time to time, foreigners come to the hospital for check-ups and counseling.

Subash says that patients aged between 12 and 64 years are kept in the rehabilitation center. People trapped in addictions come here from Pokhara and Kathmandu for shelter.
