Pavita Oli of Garalabot, Bafikot Rural Municipality-3, is in a state of shock after losing her two daughters who had gone to a wedding party at once. She keeps on shaking and fainting and the tears flowing like 'Sani Bheri' from her eyes have not stopped. Last Monday evening, her two daughters Kalpana and Urmila, who had gone to a wedding party in a settlement across the river, were found dead on Tuesday morning near the Sanibheri river.
Pavita said that around 5 pm on Monday evening, Kalpana, Urmila, along with her son Amrit and her brother-in-law's daughter Sapana, crossed the suspension bridge over the Sanibheri river to attend a friend's wedding at Bhalkhola in Musikot Municipality-1, about an hour away, after crossing it. At night, Kalpana, Urmila and Sapana returned to their home from the wedding party but did not reach home. The next morning, around 8:30 am, the bodies of Kalpana and Urmila were found on the river bank about 200 meters downstream from the house, while Sapana is still missing.
Their brother, 18-year-old Amrit, who had gone with them from home, said that he saw the sisters at the wedding house until 8 pm. ‘I didn’t see them there after 8 pm, I thought they must have come home, but I returned around 12 pm and slept with my friend, and the next morning this happened,’ he said.
On Tuesday morning, villagers had informed the police after seeing the body on the river bank. The body was identified as Kalpana. When they inquired about Urmila and Sapna, who had gone with them, Urmila’s body was also found about 200 meters below in a short time. Sapna’s whereabouts were unknown.
Mother Pavita and the family, who lost their daughters, are in mourning, while nothing has been found about Pavita’s brother-in-law’s daughter Sapna as of Thursday evening. Sapna’s father Lok Bahadur and mother Dilsara are also deranged. On Wednesday, the postmortem of the deceased Urmila and Kalpana was conducted and the funeral was held on the same day. Relatives and police have been deployed near the river to search for Sapna.
13-year-old Urmila and Sapna were studying in class 6 at Tripura Secondary School in Musikot-1. 11-year-old Kalpana was studying in class 5 at Janhit Avi in the village. They had been commuting to and from school by crossing the bridge at the school across the river, about an hour away from their home, for the past year. Therefore, this route was not new to them. Police say they were swept away while crossing the river while returning from a wedding.
Inspector Hari Prasad Pun of the District Police Office, Rukum West, said that preliminary investigations revealed that they were swept away while crossing the river. ‘We investigated the condition of the bodies and other matters from the scene, but there is no further reason for suspicion,’ he said. ‘Although the postmortem report has not come, the doctors have said that both of them died due to drowning.’
Pavita has four children, three daughters and a son. Urmila is the third and Kalpana is the youngest. She said that her husband married another woman two years ago and is no longer in touch with them. The parents of the missing Sapna have appealed for help in finding their daughter. The police have stated that they will be in touch with the victim's family and will proceed with further investigation if any suspicious matter is found.
