The concrete bridge under construction on the Babai River in Ghuiyari, Kalimati Rural Municipality-7, Ghuiyari, under the road section connecting Nepalgunj from the district headquarters via Kalimati-Damdwali-Ghuiyari-Chapparagauri, has finally been completed in eight years.
Although the agreement was to be completed in three years, the construction company delayed the completion of the concrete bridge citing various reasons.
The federal government had allocated Rs 160 million for the construction of the bridge in 2073/074. Rasuwa Elite JV was given the responsibility of working on the project tendered by the Central and Far Western Sector No. 3 Nepalgunj Office. The construction company signed the agreement on Asad 9, 2074. The length of the concrete bridge with five pillars was 180 meters.
Although the construction work of the concrete bridge was delayed, the locals of Ghuiyari have become much more comfortable. Locals who were forced to cross the river and walk during the rainy season have now started commuting in vehicles. With the completion of the concrete bridge, Ward No. 7 is now connected not only to the Ghuiyawari Municipality but also to the district headquarters Khalanga road network.
Local Nar Bahadur Rana said that it used to be a problem to carry sick people on stretchers to health institutions and hospitals at night, but now vehicles come and take them near their homes after the construction of the concrete bridge. After the construction of the bridge, vehicles coming to Ghuiyawari from Nepalgunj now reach Ward No. 6, and after the road in the park area is opened, it will be possible to go directly from Ghuiyawari to the municipal center Putalibazaar, Rampur and Khalanga.
‘Before the bridge and road were not built, if you had to go to work in the government office in Khalanga of Salyan, you had to go via Surkhet, Nepalgunj and Dang. It would have taken more than 6 hours to go directly by car. Even if the office work was completed on time, we had to stay on the way home. Now we can finish the work and return home in a single day,' he said.
Mitralal Rijal, Ward Chairman of Kalimati Rural Municipality-7, said that the construction company that was contracted in 2074 laid the foundation stone after two years and could not complete the work on time due to various reasons. He informed that after the work was completed, all the children of Ward No. 7 and some of the settlements of Ward No. 6 had a better life. He said, 'When the bridge was not built, school-going children were forced to cross the Babai River to go to school. Now they can easily go to school from the bridge. During the rainy season, when the water level in the river rose, students could not go to school regularly. Sometimes they would return from the road. Now, during the rainy season, they do not have to return home from the middle of the road.'
Ramkisun Tharu, Information Officer of the Central and Far Western Sector No. 3 Nepalgunj Office of the Bridge Project, said that the construction of the bridge was delayed for more than two years due to the inability to dig a hole for the first pillar due to a large rock found underground.
