Targeting the upcoming elections, 21 polling stations in Rukum West have been placed on the list of highly sensitive, while the security agencies have stated that disputes and possible clashes between political parties and their supporters are the main challenges.

There are 78 polling stations in the district, including two temporary ones. Where 142 polling stations have been determined. According to the District Security Committee, the remaining 43 sites have been classified as sensitive and 14 sites, including two temporary ones, have been designated as general polling stations.

‘These areas of the district have been classified considering distance, remoteness and past incidents,’ said DSP Bed Bahadur Poudel, Chief of the District Police Office, Rukum West. ‘Due to new political incidents, internal conflicts within political parties have also become a challenge for the security agencies.’

According to him, arrangements have been made to operate the programs only after giving prior notice to prevent election programs from clashing at the same place and time. On-site monitoring of polling stations, necessary improvements, and surveillance in sensitive areas have also been intensified through the security committee.

Twelve candidates are in the fray in the district. In particular, after former MP Janardan Sharma left his old party and filed his candidacy from a new party, competition between parties has intensified in some areas. The security agencies are on alert, assessing that this may increase tension between the NCP and Pralopa supporters. However, DSP Poudel said that there have been no incidents in the district so far.

The security committee has stated that a security plan is being implemented in coordination between the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, and election security personnel. Geographical remoteness and transport accessibility in the upper part of the district's Syalakhaddi and Gotamkot areas of Athabishkot Municipality have also added additional challenges to security management. This area is also a snow-covered area of the district. There are 16,660 voters in the district, including 52,396 women and one other.
