Indra Kumari Budhathoki, 36, a resident of Badakhola, Sharda Municipality-3, Salyan, has joined the Election Police less than a month after her husband's death.

The financial condition of the family was weak and it was difficult to pay off the debts incurred during foreign employment and medical treatment in the past, so she had to join the Election Police even when she was in pain.

Budhathoki's husband Purna Bahadur Budhathoki died on Poush 17 at the age of 42 after collapsing near his house.  As her alcoholic husband did not take any interest in household expenses, she worked as a laborer and took care of her two sons and 3-year-old grandson.

Due to her weak financial condition, she applied for the Election Police within 14 days of her husband's death. Indra Kumari said that she joined the Election Police to suppress the pain of death after her husband's death. 'Everyone in society used to talk about why she participated in the Election Police even in times of pain.  But there was no one to comfort my pain.  If I had listened to the opinions of society, my stove would not have been lit in my house nor would my debt have been reduced.  "There, I joined the election police to suppress my pain," she said. "I was forced to work all the time to raise my two sons and one grandson." The family's financial situation was very poor and it was difficult to raise the children, Indra Kumari said. "The mental stress increased after it was difficult to pay the debts incurred for treatment and going abroad for work." She said that joining the election police would provide some relief to the household expenses. She said that her husband had previously been unable to meet household expenses and that the family's financial situation was weak, so he went to Saudi Arabia eight years ago, spending 200,000. After returning from there, he went to Saudi Arabia again in 2079, spending 250,000, and when he fell ill and had to return home within four months, Indra Kumari said.

‘Then I incurred a debt of more than 1 lakh rupees while undergoing surgery for my own gallstones. In total, I have a debt of about 6 lakh rupees now,’ she said, ‘There is no one to earn money at home. There is no source of income. The problem is how to repay the debt.’ She says that she has been an election police officer in all the elections since 2074.
