Candidates arrive at voters' doorsteps in the cold

What you should know

At this time, it is difficult to go out even for ordinary work in the morning and evening due to the harsh winds coming from the snow-covered forests and rivers. But as the election date approaches, party leaders and workers are engaged in door-to-door campaigns wearing jackets, hats, gloves, and face masks.

As voters are not at home during the day, leaders are reaching out to their homes even in the freezing cold. Some candidates have interpreted the snowfall as a blessing for farmers. Some are cheering for the winter harvest. But analysts say that the candidates are using the cold of the snow as a weapon to warm the hearts of voters.

Meanwhile, farmers are surprised to see leaders who will not return after winning, carrying a large contingent of workers, meeting them at their doorsteps in the cold. This time, it snowed twice in Jumla in one month. The cold has increased. The candidates have reached the villages in the same cold. Although the snowfall in Jumla is affecting normal life, political activities are heating up the atmosphere.

Most of the mountainous parts of Jumla are still covered in snow. Vehicles are being used only in the lower areas connected to the Karnali Highway. The unpaved roads dug in the village are covered in snow. Some roads are slippery with ice.

Candidates have no choice but to go on foot to campaign. Nepal Communist Party candidate Naresh Bhandari, who reached Peregaun, Patarasi Rural Municipality-2, amid the snowfall, says that he has reached the vicinity of the Patarasi Himal and is busy in raising the morale of farmers.

‘We are active at the doorsteps of farmers during the upcoming election to the House of Representatives to be held on Falgun 21. It is snowing heavily. Although it is a temporary cold for us, it is a boon for farmers,’ said NCP candidate Bhandari. ‘This snow will not only protect farmers’ crops. It will also wash away the mud and dirt that has been accumulated in politics.’ This will inspire us to choose a representative who will work cleanly in this election.' Bhandari has demanded from the government to hold the election in a fair and fearless environment.'

Similarly, RPP spokesperson and candidate Gyanendra Shahi has reached eight local levels of the district in the snow. Shahi, who has already conducted the first phase of voter survey in the cold, is now saying that Jumla will be introduced as a snow tourism area. Addressing on social media after the snowfall, he said that Jumla has become white with snow.

He said, 'Now, Jumla Khalanga, Rara Lake, Patarasi Himal and Sinja Valley look beautiful with snow. This snow is not only beneficial for farmers, but it is also seen that it will help in attracting domestic and foreign tourists.'

RPP candidate Binita Kathayat also reached the doorsteps of voters in the snow. He said that just as snow was necessary for winter crops, elections are necessary for the development of the country and that winter rains will inspire voters to choose the right candidate.

Currently, candidates from the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and others are not able to go to remote villages. They are campaigning in areas around the district headquarters. Voters are now confidently putting forward their demands to the candidates who have reached the doorsteps. The practice of only one candidate giving speeches like last year's election has been stopped. Voters are also understanding the mood of the candidates through double interaction.

NCP candidate Bhandari said, 'We listen to the feedback and suggestions of the voters. Only then will we put forward our election agendas.'

Currently, all the candidates are at the doorsteps of the voters with hope in their hearts and commitments in their words. The candidates are also promising to fulfill the demands of the voters.
