No matter how big the construction business is, they should terminate the contracts of sick projects: Chief Minister Kandel

What you should know

Karnali Province Chief Minister Yamalal Kandel has directed the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure to terminate the contracts of sick projects, no matter how big they are. He has directed the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure to regulate the contract process and terminate the contracts of sick projects that are awarded contracts but fail to complete the projects on time and leave the projects stranded.

At the half-yearly program of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development on Thursday, he said that the contracts of construction entrepreneurs who do not complete the work on time should be terminated, regardless of their access and power.

He said that the government will allocate the necessary budget but if the project is not completed on time and left unfinished, it will create distrust among the citizens towards the government.  He said, ‘If there is money, work is not being done and the plan is left unfinished, then we do not need to be flexible towards such construction entrepreneurs.’ Chief Minister Kandel directed the ministry to facilitate construction entrepreneurs as much as possible and to take up the responsibility of completing the project and to terminate the contract in a proper manner if the facilitation does not yield results.

Stating that the contract of a former minister was also terminated due to negligence in the construction of roads under the provincial capital,  he also directed them to make necessary preparations to restart the projects that were terminated due to termination of the contract. 'We have broken the contract involving the incumbent MP and minister after the work was not completed on time. Don't be afraid of power. The government will take responsibility for it,' he said. 'If the construction contractor has done the work, don't make excuses. Even if it is called, pay him.' In the review program, he said that everyone should change their working style as it is not possible to give the results that the citizens want with the old mentality. Chief Minister Kandel was of the opinion that the traditional working style would not be able to give results as there is a huge gap between the expectations of the citizens and the working style of the state machinery. In the program, Secretary of the Ministry Arjun Bam said that some projects from the last three years are sick and a decision should be taken on them in time. He said that about 82 percent of the projects have already gone through the procurement process in the current fiscal year and that all the projects are in the approval stage, and that by mid-Magh, all the projects will go through the contract process.
