Locals in Musikot-2 Satipole and surrounding areas have blocked the disposal of garbage collected from Salle, Khalanga, Bagbazar and Serigaun, the main market areas of Musikot Municipality. Due to the obstruction by the locals, garbage has started piling up in the houses of the market.

Local Ramesh Khadka said that the road leading to the market has been demolished since last December 21st, saying that garbage should not be thrown away.

‘For the past 13 years, the market garbage has been being thrown here. We have repeatedly requested not to do this, but it has not been heard. Every day, trucks of garbage are being brought in, dumped and burned, which has caused a foul smell in the village. That is why we have obstructed it,’ he said, ‘In the past, garbage was thrown away under various pretexts, but now we will not allow this to happen under any circumstances. The municipality must find an alternative.’

Recalling that the DPR was prepared to turn the place where garbage is currently being thrown into a jeep park, Khadka also demanded that the work should be done as planned.

After the locals’ obstruction, the market garbage has not been collected for the past eight days. Shiva Shrestha, a businessman from Khalanga Bazaar, said that he is facing difficulties due to this. ‘The garbage collection vehicles have stopped coming. It has been heard that this happened because garbage was stopped. We have piled up as much garbage as we can at home,' he said.

Musikot-1 Ward Chairman Gyanu Chand said that work has been progressing to build a dumping site in Nipane, Ward No. 1, but it has not been completed due to lack of sufficient land. 'Some work has been done for this in Nipane. But that too has not been completed. We are trying to purchase more land and complete the work to find a sustainable solution to the problem,' he said.

Ward Chairman Chand informed that a negotiation committee was formed last Friday under the coordination of the deputy mayor of Satipole to resolve the problem through dialogue with the locals, and said that they will now take the initiative to find a solution to the problem immediately.

On the other hand, even though the government has formed a negotiation committee, the locals of Satipole say that they are adamant that they will not allow garbage to be dumped under any conditions.
