A district-level children's gathering has been organized in the district headquarters of Manma to identify issues, formulate plans with the participation of children, and select new leadership.

The meeting that began on Saturday under the Empowered Girls Project will identify the problems and issues faced by the children of Kalikot, formulate a plan, and select district-level leadership.

The meeting, which began with the participation of representatives of children's networks from all 9 local levels of the district, will provide orientation on children's issues, the role of stakeholders, laws and policies related to children, said Gauri Kumari Shahi, chairperson of the Human Rights and Environment Development Center.

Stating that today's children are more active on social media, Kalikot Chief District Officer Gokarna Raj Suyal said that parents should be aware of the negative content on social media that affects children's lives.

He emphasized that children involved in child marriage and drug abuse in Kalikot should be active as activists.  He said that child marriage is a major problem in Kalikot and narrated an incident where a 20-year-old woman had already given birth to 3 children when she came to apply for citizenship. Child marriage has affected the health, education, and socialization of children, he said.

District Coordination Committee member Dhan Bahadur Shahi said that government and non-governmental bodies should work together on the issues of education, awareness, health and nutrition, and sexual and reproductive health rights of children and adolescents.

Plan International suggested that since it is not enough to develop the capacity of children at the local level alone, local levels, thematic offices, and non-governmental organizations should work together to provide equal opportunities to children in all municipalities.

The gathering, facilitated by Midwestern University Associate Professor Lalit Jung Shahi, District Administrator Suyal, Police Chief Him Bahadur Khatri, and others, will be held on Saturday and a declaration will be issued on Sunday, said Padma Raj Hamal, Coordinator of the Empowered Girls Project.

Rozna Sarki, a participant from Raskot, said that issues such as child marriage, child labor, caste discrimination, irregular school attendance, and lack of meaningful participation have been identified in Kalikot. She informed that she plans to record all the questions and submit them to the district stakeholders on Sunday.
