The National Assembly member election is set to be contested between the alliance of the Nepali Congress and the UML and the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) in Karnali. The contest is set to be for two members in Karnali.
The election officer's office has informed that Congress provincial president Lalit Jung Shahi and UML's Mina Singh Rakhal have filed their candidacies from the alliance, while Buddhi Prasad Sharma and Anju Mahatara (Shahi) have filed their nominations from the NCP, according to the election officer.
Shahi has filed his candidacy from the other cluster and Rakhal from the women's cluster. Shahi was defeated by Congress's rebel candidate Devendra Bahadur Shahi from Jumla 1 (A) in the 2070 BS provincial assembly election. Similarly, Rakhal from Dailekh was a member of the Karnali provincial assembly through proportional representation in 2074 BS. Sharma of the former Maoist is from Rukum West, while Mahatara of the former Unified Socialist Party represents Dolpa. Both of them are participating in the election for the first time.
There are 198 voters in Karnali for the national assembly election. Election Officer Deepak Dhakal informed that 158 people's representatives, including 40 members of the Karnali Provincial Assembly and 79 local level chiefs, deputy chiefs, chairmen and vice-chairmen, will participate in the voting.
The voting weight of the provincial assembly members has been set at 53, while the voting weight of the local level chiefs and deputy chiefs is 19. Accordingly, the provincial assembly members have a vote weight of 2,120 and the local level has a vote weight of 5,122, including 3,092. Of this vote weight, the Congress-UML alliance has a vote weight of 3,092 and the NCP has a vote weight of 1,939.
There are 15 members of the Congress in the Karnali Provincial Assembly, 14 of the NCP, 10 of the UML and 1 of the RPP. The number of elected chiefs, deputy chiefs, chairmen and vice-chairmen from the Congress across Karnali is 58. Accordingly, there are 1,897 people, including 795 and 1,102 of the 15 provincial assembly members. In the last local level elections, 35 people were elected from the UML, including the chief, deputy chief, chairmen and vice-chairmen. Their vote share is 665 and 10 provincial assembly members have 530 votes, totaling 1,195.
Similarly, there are 63 people's representatives of the NCP across the province. Their vote share is 1,197 and 742 of the provincial parliamentarians have 1,939 votes. One RPP parliamentarian has 53 votes and two independently elected local level officials have 38 votes.
