The UML is struggling to recommend a candidate for Kalikot for the House of Representatives elections to be held on February 21.
The delay in recommending candidates has been due to the lack of consensus among the aspirants and the ambition to have a single recommendation.
The party's central members, some provincial members and some district committee officials have been holding discussions at a hotel in Kathmandu for three days. The meeting is continuing on Monday as well. UML Kalikot Secretary Pushparaj Acharya said that the discussions took time due to the large number of aspirants.
He said that there was some delay as extensive discussions were required to select a suitable candidate. 'Since candidates from other parties have already been recommended, it has taken time to select a suitable one from the various names that have come to make the party victorious,' he said.
A leader who attended the meeting said that the delay was due to the request made by party central member and former district in-charge Nagindra Shahi to recommend him alone but the other aspirants did not accept it. 'When Nagindraji wanted to send his single recommendation, the others did not accept it, and the meeting was prolonged,' the leader said.
UML Kalikot Chairman Tularaj Malla said that there was no rush as the party has given time till 24 to recommend candidates. He claimed that there was no dispute in the candidate recommendation.
When the UML Kalikot meeting was held in Kathmandu to discuss the candidate selection, all three central members Nagindra Shahi, Min Bahadur Shahi and another central member Indira Sanjyal have claimed, while other leaders Kashi Chandra Baral, Vakil Bam, Ramesh Shahi, Tapendra Shahi and others are also aspiring.
Former provincial MP Kurmaraj Shahi, who is still in Kalikot, said that he is also interested. ‘I heard that a meeting was held in Kathmandu to discuss the need for a discussion in the district. I also have a claim,’ he said.
In the 2079 election, UML candidate Nagindra Shahi was defeated by Mahendra Bahadur Shahi of the Maoist Center, Congress and Unified Socialist Alliance by 7,09 votes.
Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal from the Nepali Communist Party, youth leader Bhupendra Jung Shahi from the Nepali Congress, and Prakash Neupane from the National Independent Party have been recommended to contest the election from Kalikot.
