The only municipality in Jumla, Chandannath Municipality, has installed street lights in Khalanga. It has now become easier to walk at night and has helped in reducing all kinds of disturbances that occur in the dark.
Chandannath Municipality Engineer Lokendra Mahat said that 200 street lights have been installed, focusing on Khalanga Bazaar. ‘Theft and criminal activities are increasing now. Street lights have been installed in the streets, squares and public places of Khalanga to stop all of them,’ Mahat said.

4,000 meters of cable wire have been extended for street lights. Each street light has a 50-watt bulb. The municipality has invested 1.75 million rupees in two lights on a pole, installation costs and wiring.
The municipality is preparing to test the effectiveness and sustainability of street lights in the market area and take them to the settlement level. The goal is to install street lights wherever the road reaches by the next fiscal year. Local Arjun Budha informed that the installation of street lights has helped prevent all kinds of evils that occur at night.
He said, ‘Earlier, theft incidents increased a lot. Now theft and robbery will be stopped. It will be easier to monitor thieves.’ The incidents of theft are increasing as it gets colder in winter, the elder said, ‘It is easier to monitor security personnel by installing street lights.’
The District Police Office, Jumla, has made public the data of five theft cases registered in the fiscal year 2079/80 and all of them have been resolved. DSP Rabin Babu Regmi informed that one theft case was registered in the fiscal year 2080/081 and four theft cases were registered in the fiscal year 2081/082 and all of them have been resolved.
‘No theft cases have been formally registered so far in the current fiscal year,’ he said, ‘Now it is expected that street lights will help provide security.’ The street lights will be on from 6 pm to 6 am. This is also making it easier for students studying tuition.
