Most orphanages in Karnali are non-compliant with standards

Most of the orphanages operating in Karnali Province have been found to be non-compliant. According to the National Report on Children, 2082, 10 orphanages in Karnali are non-compliant.

Only 2 orphanages have met the Nepal Government's standards for orphanage operation and management, 2079. 6 orphanages have received operating permits from the National Council for Child Rights. 

There are 433 children living in orphanages in the province. 286 children are living in 5 orphanages in Surkhet, while 23 are living in 2 orphanages in Kalikot. 

There are 22 children living in 1 orphanage in Jajarkot, 24 in Jumla, 50 in Humla, and 11 in Mugu. Similarly, there are 17 children in a orphanage in Dolpa district.

Surkhet's Birendranagar Municipality has stated that it is searching for orphanages operating against the standards. Sarla Regmi, the head of the Women and Children's Branch, informed that the closure of orphanages that do not meet the standards will be done.

She said that a few years ago, the municipality had placed children in the care of their guardians from various orphanages that did not meet the standards. She said that 41 children were sent to a orphanage in Kathmandu.

According to the status report of children released by the National Council for Child Rights, Karnali Province, 78 percent of the children currently sheltered in orphanages do not need an orphanage. Only 22 percent of the children need an orphanage.  

Dambar Rokaya, coordinator of the National Council for Child Rights, Karnali Province, informed that about 70 percent of the children of Karnali are sheltering in the 454 orphanages operating across the country.

Surendra Lama Tamang of Himali Navin Samaj, who has been working in the field of children, said that children with parents or guardians live in orphanages opened for parents.
