Locals celebrated Diwali in the village after hearing the news that an area administration office had been approved in Raskot for 70,000 residents of five local levels across the Karnali River who were forced to travel to the district headquarters Manma for 3 days to obtain citizenship.
‘It used to take 3 days and cost at least 3,000 to obtain citizenship,’ said Bimal Shahi of Bijaypur, Raskot-5. ‘Now we will get the service in the village, it will save time and money.’
Sarita Shahi, 35, of Laherela, Raskot-1, said that half of Kalikot’s total population of 145,000 will benefit from this decision. She said that it took her 4 days to go to the district administration to obtain citizenship.
In Kalikot, which is located in a remote region, the government had taken a decision in July after complaints that residents of five local levels across the Karnali River, Raskot, Narharinath, Sannitriveni, Pachaljharana and Palata, were facing hardships in obtaining citizenship.
As per the demand of the locals, the Cabinet meeting on December 21 approved the operation of area administration offices in eight districts including Raskot, and the decision was welcomed in Raskot Municipality, said Mayor Dharmaraj Shahi.
According to him, Raskot is a suitable place for all five local levels under Province K of Kalikot. He said that Raskot's initiative to promote education, health and tourism by making Raskot a center is succeeding.
A new building for the area administration office is being constructed in Raskot. Mayor Shahi said that if the district administration sends manpower along with employees, services can be resumed immediately by making alternative arrangements.

After the establishment of the area administration in Raskot, it will be most convenient for the residents of Mumra, Shipkhana, Syuna, Phukot, Nanikot and others. The residents of Ramnakot, Thirpu, Khin and Dhaulagoh in the Pachaljharana here will also have their journey shortened by half. Krishnalal Sanjaya of Raskot-4 said that he is happy that they can return home in a day without having to settle down.
