A humanitarian aid and disaster relief pool is to be constructed within the Surkhet Airport premises.

The Karnali Provincial Government is going to build the pond in collaboration with the Nepali Army.

The pond, which will be built within the army's western Surkhet Airport Airbase, will be useful in controlling fires or other fires by filling it with water from helicopters, said Uttam Gautam, Chief of the Disaster Division of the Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers.

According to him, the technology is called 'bomb bucket'. This means a special bucket hung on a helicopter, which is filled with water from a pond or lake and dropped on forest fires or other fires.

Deputy Secretary Gautam said that the pond will be a maximum of 97 feet long and 13 feet deep. The cost of this pond, which will be built with the technical assistance of the Army, will be 99 lakh 96 thousand 200 rupees, Deputy Secretary Gautam informed.

Karnali Province Chief Minister Yamalal Kandel inaugurated the construction today and said that the pond would be useful for preparedness as disasters can happen suddenly. He said that since arson incidents are increasing every day due to increasing urbanization, this pond would make it easier to control fires using helicopters and fire engines.

Chief Minister Kandel said that the provincial government is collaborating with the army and other security agencies to mitigate disasters, and that collective efforts are needed in disaster mitigation.
