An influenza outbreak has been observed in the villages of Mugu. The outbreak, which started in Bamgaun, Chhayanath Rara Municipality-12, a week and a half ago, has spread to Mugamkarmarong and Khatyad rural municipalities.

Locals are stranded at home after experiencing symptoms such as high fever, cough, headache, chills, vomiting, and body aches. As the number of patients increases, there is a shortage of medicine.

After the outbreak, the pressure of patients has increased in the district hospital and health posts. Dr. Dipendra Jung Shahi of the hospital said that nearly 800 patients were treated in a week at the district hospital.

According to him, up to 150 patients are coming to the hospital for treatment daily. ‘The patients are not admitted and kept, we are sending them after giving them medicine,’ he said, ‘The patient’s sample was tested and it was confirmed to be influenza, preparations are being made to send it to the provincial laboratory for further testing.’

According to him, the number of patients has also increased in 7, 8, and 9 of Mugamkarmarong Rural Municipality. After the increase in patients, a team including Dr. Shahi and another Dr. Nahakul Shahi of the hospital have gone to Mugamkarmarong and returned.

He informed that the team has returned after treating nearly 450 patients. ‘The municipality has not purchased medicine for three months, we have given the medicine to the municipality’s health workers who went with our team,’ he said, ‘but there is a shortage of medicine as people are sick in every house.’

For the past one and a half weeks, fever patients have also increased in villages of Soru and Khatyad rural municipalities. Local health worker Maniraj Budha said that people are falling sick in villages including Rawalbada, Mathilibru, Talilibru, Bhadgaun, Khatikuyani, Fotu, Gilibili due to fever and seasonal cold and cough.

According to him, fever has been affecting people from children to the elderly in the village. ‘There is no house without patients,’ he said, ‘up to 3 people in a single house are sick, but there is a problem in treatment as there is not enough medicine in the village.’ Ang Bahadur Budha, principal of Kalika Secondary School, said that teaching and learning have started to be affected as students are falling ill.

According to him, about 80 students out of the 250 students have fever. Mugamkarmarong Rural Municipality Chairman Tshiringkapne Lama said that about 3 dozen health workers have been deployed for treatment as the number of patients has increased.

‘There is a shortage of medicine as the number of patients has increased in each house,’ he said, ‘Although the provincial and federal governments have been requested to manage the medicine, it has been ignored.’
