An error has been found in the assessment of apple insurance losses in Jumla. Farmers are angry even though they are receiving less compensation than the premium fee.
The farmers have accused the insurance company of assessing the damage on a whim. There is a provision to provide insurance to provide relief to bear the risks that may occur in the future. Compensation should be provided as per the insurance policy.
Farmers are angry that the insurance policy has reduced the premium fee by Rs 36 to Rs 24 after the farmers of Jumla paid Rs 12. The issue of the report that there was no drought despite evidence of drought and hail has now started to arise seriously. The farmers have said that the decision of the insurance company to pay less than the premium amount was erroneous. They have demanded that the decision be immediately corrected and the amount be paid according to the damage caused to the apples planted by the farmers.
On Wednesday, a discussion was held at the District Administration Office between the employees of the insurance company's Jumla office, the local administration and the farmers. In which the erroneous insurance assessment should be corrected, the actual report on whether there was rain and drought should be shown, and the situation of some getting more and some getting less in the same geography should be clarified. Accordingly, the District Administration Office, Jumla, has sent a letter to Shikhar Insurance Company, which insures apples.
Chief District Officer Deepak Poudel has called the CEO of Shikhar Insurance Company and urged him to solve the problems seen in Jumla. The letter states that the responsible official of the company should reach Jumla within five days to listen to the problems of the farmers and come with supporting evidence. So far, farmers of Patarasi, Tatopani and Kanakasundari have not been able to receive the apple insurance amount. Even though the farmers receive a claim payment lower than the premium fee, they are not accepting it.
Tatopani Rural Municipality Chairman Nanda Prasad Chaulagain said that the discrimination seen in the claim payment amount to the insured is unacceptable. He said, "If the money does not reach the farmers within the next week, the local government leadership will be forced to take to the streets."
He said that he should submit data on how many farmers in the rural municipality have insured how many plants. Even though the address is different and the geography is the same, it has been requested to submit the basis of assessment, which requires Rs 638 in the municipality but Rs 24 in Tatopani rural municipality during the drought. Shikhar Insurance Company Karnali in-charge Rishiram Pandey said that there is a problem in paying claims as the government has not been able to provide a subsidy of Rs 230 million.
He said that there are some problems in the insurance assessment in the case of farmers of Tatopani, Kanakasundari and Patarasi. A total of 5,379 people had apple insurance in Jumla. So far, 655 people have received compensation. 947 people have completed the process. Payment is being delayed due to the lack of signatures of 294 farmers. Farmers of Tatopani have not signed since they will receive less than the premium amount.
