Despite continuous meetings since November 24 to select candidates for the upcoming House of Representatives elections to be held on February 21, the Jumla Congress has not been able to make a selection.

Congress Jumla spokesperson Meghraj Giri* informed that even after four days of continuous discussions, the candidate could not be selected. ‘A lot of general discussions have taken place, but a decision has not been made to the point of making an official decision and recommendation,’ spokesperson Devkata said, ‘Efforts are being made to make a final decision.’

In the direct route, 7 people have claimed to be candidates, but only three have been selected. Discussions are currently underway in the names of former MP Kantika Sejuwal, Congress President Karna Bahadur Shahi and former Vice President Khadka Bahadur Sejuwal. Spokesperson Giri said that discussions are also underway on reducing the number of candidates in the direct route.

According to him, the maximum number of 15 people have claimed in the proportional route. The other establishment parties are still in the position that only the name of Dhan Bahadur Basnet should be recommended in the proportional route. It is said that the candidate selection was difficult because there are too many ambitions in the proportional route.

Although preparations are underway to recommend the names of former Minister of State Bhakta Bahadur Rokaya and Congress Karnali Province President Lalit Jung Shahi to the National Assembly, it has been emphasized that only one other name should be recommended. The other parties in the establishment have maintained their stance that Bhakta Bahadur Rokaya's single name should be recommended.

The work of preparing the list of aspirants was done on the first day on November 24. Most of the leaders and workers present at the meeting on November 25 had raised their hands saying that the names of President Karna Bahadur Shahi should be recommended as a single name in the House of Representatives, Bhakta Bahadur Rokaya in the National Assembly, and Dhan Bahadur Basnet in the proportional system should be recommended as a single name. However, Congress Jumla has stated that the names have not been recommended yet due to disagreements among the leaders.

Most of the Congress leaders and workers are in favor of recommending the name of President Karna Bahadur Shahi as a single name. But since the candidates for the proportional and National Assembly have not been decided, it is also having a direct impact.

Former MP Kantika Sejuwal is also being assessed as a strong candidate for the Congress in Jumla for the upcoming elections. She is the first elected female mayor in Nepal for Chandannath Municipality. Despite being a proportional representation MP, she seems to be taking the initiative to woo leaders and cadres, promising to contest the election directly once.

Spokesperson Giri informed that preparations are being made to select and recommend candidates on the basis of mutual understanding on Sunday.
