Farmers are excited as traders have started reaching the villages to buy beans. Currently, farmers are selling beans in the villages for Rs 200 per kg. Traders are busy purchasing and storing beans in the district's retail markets.
According to her, this year she has sold beans worth Rs 20,800. Last year alone, she sold beans worth Rs 60,000.
‘Earlier, beans were sold only after being carried to the district headquarters,’ said Sunakali, ‘Now traders have reached the villages. Farmers set the price. Traders are collecting the beans produced in the villages and taking them to the city.’
Jumla beans have reached cities including Surkhet, Nepalgunj, Pokhara, Chitwan and Kathmandu. ‘The compulsion to go to the headquarters to sell beans has been removed,’ added Man Bahadur Budha of Tila Rural Municipality-9, ‘We are earning a lot of income by selling beans to traders door to door. Which is bringing a change in the overall standard of living of the village.’
Local Nunkali Bohora sold beans worth Rs 46,000. She said that she used to earn money from selling beans to support her children's education and household expenses. She said, "Earlier, when the bean traders did not arrive, they would be worried. In the meantime, farmers would exchange rice for beans, but now that the traders have reached the village, the transactions are being done in cash. This is a very happy situation for the farmers."
With the arrival of traders in the village, farmers have started commercial bean cultivation. The Agricultural Development Office is also working as bean pocket areas, targeting areas where more beans are produced.
According to the data of the District Agricultural Development Office, beans are being cultivated on 2,250 hectares in the district. 4,260 metric tons of beans are being produced.
