11-year-old Bikash Damai of Chandannath Municipality-9, Talium, has been taking care of his ailing mother for the past year, having skipped school. While his friends were carrying their bags to school, he was busy taking care of his mother in the hospital.

Vikas' mother, 40-year-old Darshana, has been undergoing spinal treatment at the Karnali Health Sciences Institute Teaching Hospital, Jumla for a year.

Darshana's spine was fractured when she fell from the stairs at home. She stays in the hospital to take care of her ailing mother. Vikas recounted how he had to quit his studies after having to wait for his ailing mother. 'It seems like I will stay in the hospital as long as my mother breathes,' he said. 'I have been sitting on my mother's pillow and counting the days until she recovers and returns home.'

Vikas' father has passed away. Because of this, he is forced to stay in the hospital. 'My father has passed away. My mother's spine is fractured. There is no one to cook rice at home,' Vikas said. 'It hurts when I see my friends going to school carrying their bags.' But, I don't want to leave my mother.'

Until Darshana fell ill, Vikas was studying in class 2 at the government school in Jatibhid in the village. When his mother fell ill and died, his days of sorrow also began. 'Mother is in the hospital. Seeing this, I don't feel like leaving her to go to school, even if I go to school,' Vikas added, 'That's why I decided to stay with my mother in the hospital.'

Darshana said that she kept her son in the hospital with her because there was no third person in the house and it would be difficult to eat, stay and study if she lived alone. The hospital itself provides her with food. 'My husband passed away because of my worries,' she said, 'How long will I keep my son in the hospital? I wish I could have asked someone to make him study.'

Darshana's lower body is paralyzed. She is unable to cook, eat and go to the toilet on her own. Earlier, her husband was taking care of her. She said that now, after the death of her husband, she has become like a helpless person.

Dr. Pujan Rokaya, Vice Chancellor of Karnali Health Sciences Academy Teaching Hospital, Jumla, said that the hospital has been providing free treatment to Darshan for a year.

Vikas also wants to go to school. But there is no support. ‘It would be better if someone helped with his care and studies,’ Darshan complained. ‘As long as I am alive, my son’s condition will continue like this,’ Darshan said, shedding tears. ‘My body is not working. I can’t get up now. But my 11-year-old son Vikas is already worried about his future.’ Her family, who earn their living by working as a labourer, is currently in distress.
