The postmortem report of Gange Sunar, a prisoner from Pipira, Birendranagar Municipality-11, who died last Friday in Surkhet, has been received.

The 36-year-old died of a heart attack, according to doctors involved in the postmortem.

A team of forensic expert Dr. Arbin Shakya from Bheri Hospital, Nepalgunj, had come to Surkhet for the postmortem of the deceased. Talking to Kantipur, Dr. Shakya said, "The initial report of the postmortem has come. It seems that the detainee died of a heart problem. The heart vessel was blocked. No injuries were seen anywhere."

He said that the blood was sent for a test. This report is yet to come. According to District Police Spokesperson DSP Mohan Jung Budthapa, relatives have identified the body after the postmortem report. Sunar was found unconscious in his bed at 5:58 am on Friday. The doctor declared him dead when he was taken to the provincial hospital.

DSP Budthapa said that he has been in custody for 78 days. According to him, the case was filed with the government attorney's office four days before his death and his case was filed on Friday.

Police have said that they have reviewed CCTV footage installed in the detention center after the detainee's death. According to Surkhet Police Chief Sudhir Raj Shahi, the deceased is a former drug user. 'The police found him while doing business,' he said, 'There were 3 of them. Everyone was together. He was presented in court three or four days ago. If the court had decided, he could have been in prison.'

He said that the deceased's condition was normal, he only had a cold. He said, 'He used to stay with his friends in detention. We asked everywhere, there is CCTV footage. He slept laughing. When he woke up in the morning, his friend who was sleeping with him called him to wake up, but he did not wake up and another friend also tried to wake him up and then the police were called. He immediately went and checked him. He was unconscious by the time he was taken to the hospital.'

He said that when he looked at the CCTV footage to see if anything had happened at night, there was no suspicious activity. Meanwhile, relatives of the deceased protested outside the District Police Office on Friday afternoon demanding an impartial investigation into the incident.

Following the protests by relatives, a four-member investigation committee has been formed under the coordination of Hit Prasad Poudel, Administrative Officer of the District Administration Office, Surkhet.

The committee includes Ward No. 11 Chairperson Khimlal Devkota, Pitambar Dhakal from the Human Rights Network, Malati BK, a member of the National Dalit Journalists Association and Karnali Province Secretary, and Gita Sunar on behalf of the deceased's family.
