After scrub typhus was not brought under control in Darma Rural Municipality, door-to-door health screening and treatment began from Wednesday.

With the technical support of the rural municipality management and the Karnali provincial government, the health check-up and treatment of the patients have started.

After four women died during treatment at the Medical College in Kohalpur due to high fever and symptoms similar to scrub typhus in the past two weeks, 51 people were found to be infected with scrub typhus in health camps conducted in two wards.

Darma rural municipality chairperson Neem Bahadur KC said that the technical team of the municipality and the provincial government has started health check-up of suspects from Berukhet and Farula in Ward 3. He informed that while the health check-up of 31 people on the first day on Wednesday, 5 more people were found to have scrub typhus.

According to him, a team of health workers divided into two groups has been deployed to places including Budhakafal, Ligachhap, Ojbang on Thursday morning. ‘The team of health workers deployed from house to house has been conducting health check-up of the patients.’ If scrub typhus is found positive, they are being treated and advised at home,' he said.

Last Sunday and Monday, 51 people were found to be infected with scrub typhus in a camp conducted in Wards 3 and 5 in collaboration with the Health Service Office Salyan and Darma Rural Municipality.

On Wednesday, five more patients were tested in some places in Ward 3, bringing the total number of scrub typhus patients in both wards to 56. He said that since there are patients with fever and cold in every house, the number of patients is expected to increase as the tests are conducted.

Even though four people lost their lives due to delay in treatment due to lack of information about scrub typhus, Yagya Bahadur Basnet, Head of the Health Branch of Darma Rural Municipality, said that they went door to door to identify the patients and started treatment to prevent further human losses.

‘When we called the health post for testing, it was found that patients from remote settlements were not receiving treatment. Since we were not receiving timely treatment, we started going door-to-door to provide health tests and treatment.’ He said that this made it easier for the team of health workers sent by the provincial government to conduct research. He said that the team of health workers is also conducting awareness classes in schools to prevent scrub typhus.
