Salaries of personal secretaries of Karnali Provincial Assembly members withheld, MPs pressuring for payment

The Karnali Provincial Assembly has stopped the salaries of the personal secretaries of MPs.

The Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers had written to the Provincial Assembly Secretariat on Asoj 20 to implement the decision of the federal government's Council of Ministers on Asoj 20. Accordingly, the salaries of the personal secretaries for the month of Asoj have been stopped. 

An official of the secretariat said that the lawmakers are putting pressure through various channels after the salaries of the personal secretaries were stopped. 'In the meeting of the Business Committee held on Wednesday, the lawmakers had also raised the issue of salary facilities,' he said, 'The problem will be resolved by taking necessary decisions soon.'

According to Netra Bahadur Karki, spokesperson of the Provincial Assembly Secretariat, the salaries for the month of Bhadra had already been sent to the account of the personal secretariat. He informed that the personal secretaries of the lawmakers are being paid a salary of the level of Nayab Subba.

There are 8 ministers including the Chief Minister in the Karnali government. Apart from them, 32 office bearers and members of the Provincial Assembly have hired their own secretaries, drivers and office assistants. According to the secretariat, the number of these employees is 48, while  Their salaries cost around Rs 1.5 million.

Provincial Assembly Secretary Jeevraj Budhathoki said that the salaries of the personal secretaries have been stopped after the Chief Minister's Office wrote a letter in accordance with the federal government's decision. According to him, no policy decision has been made to abolish the personal secretary facility. The Karnali Provincial Assembly meeting is not in session at the moment.

On Bhadra 24, the Provincial Assembly Secretariat was arsoned and vandalized during the protest led by Gen-G. Due to the arson, some of the Provincial Assembly buildings, including all documents, furniture, computers, electronic equipment and other materials, have been destroyed. Due to this, it is now limited to regular and administrative work only. The sixth session of the second term ended on Shrawan 21.
