Karnali Province Chief Minister Yamalal Kandel has requested the federal government to prevent the Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project from becoming a 'problematic project'.

Amidst the talk of the recently formed government's preparations to keep the project as a problematic project, Chief Minister Kandel, who reached the project site and discussed with the concerned parties, said that it is natural to be concerned about the future of the project as the pace of work is not increasing in this situation and the project will not be completed even after the additional time, and said that the federal government should take special initiative in this regard.

During the discussion, Chief Minister Kandel said that since it is the province's concern and concern since it is the federal government's domain, the pace of construction of this project of national pride should not be left in this state. He said, 'Even after the additional time, only around 60 percent of the work has been done, and it is not expected to be completed in the next four years at this pace.'

Chief Minister Kandel expressed dissatisfaction saying that even though it is a national pride, the federal government has not taken the initiative that it should have taken. Chief Minister Kandel had visited the project site in Babai on Friday and had on-site observation and discussions with the chief and representatives of construction entrepreneurs.

During the discussion, Chief Minister Kandel said that the federal government should take the initiative to formulate a special plan to speed up the work instead of preparing to keep the project as a problematic project by looking at the current progress of the project. He informed that the federal government will be informed soon in this regard.

During the discussion, Project Chief Surendra Poudel said that the work progress of the project is weaker than expected and the work cannot be completed within the extended time. He said that since their authority is limited in the project, special initiative should be taken in this regard by the higher authorities.

The overall progress of the Bheri-Babai Diversion Project, which was started in the 2071/72 BS fiscal year, has reached about 57 percent so far. With about five and a half months left, the project deadline is Chaitra 2082. There are still 10 high-level technical positions vacant in the project, which has affected the pace of work.

Located in Bheriganga Municipality-11 Chiple, Surkhet, the project plans to bring the water of the Bheri River to the Babai River in Bardiya district through a 12.2-kilometer-long tunnel. It aims to generate 46.6 megawatts of electricity and provide irrigation facilities to about 51,000 hectares of land in Banke and Bardiya.

The Chinese company COVEK, which was entrusted with the construction of the tunnel in the first phase, completed the tunnel work in April 2076, a year ahead of schedule. The then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had performed the 'break-through' of the tunnel in Chiple that year. However, the work on the second phase has been slow in recent years.
