Calicut 68th Literate District Declaration

Kalikot was declared the 9th literate district of Karnali and the 68th literate district of the country on Thursday. Kalikot has been declared a literate district with the slogan 'Literacy Nepal Campaign, We are Nepali identity'.

Under the chairmanship of District Coordination Chief Dhanjit Bahadur Shahi and Constituent Assembly Member Tularaj Bista as chief guest, with the participation of all 9 local level chiefs and representatives, educational stakeholders, teachers, parents, children, Kalikot was declared a literate district, said Education Development and Coordination Unit Head Harsh Prasad Choulagai. Chaulagai, the head of the unit, said that after the declaration of all 9 local levels of the district as literate municipalities within the last June, Kalikot was declared the 68th literate district of the country and the 9th literate district of Karnali province on Thursday.

For literacy, 95 percent of citizens have been made literate by conducting a literacy campaign based on the age group of 15 to 59. Palata Village Municipality Education Branch Head Durgalal Neupane said that Kalikot district has been declared literate through the municipality. 'On paper, it seems that more people are literate than the population,' he said, 'in practice, we have not yet made everyone literate.'

Chief District Officer Gokarnaraj Suyal said that the literate district was declared after the fact that more than 95 percent of the citizens in the age group of 15 to 59 years were literate in all 9 local levels of Kalikot. 'Many programs have been conducted for literacy since before,' he said. The government has been conducting the Literate Nepal Campaign since 2011 by starting an intensive literacy program.

According to the standards of literacy determined by the government, it is considered literate after completing 50 percent of the 12 indicators. According to the standards, one should be able to read and write characters/letters of the national language or mother tongue, be able to read price lists and bills written in their own language, and be able to write and read their own and family members' names and ages. Similarly, can recognize and use numbers and letters on mobile phones and calculators, can write numbers from 0 to 9, can count from 1 to 100,  Must be able to keep track of transactions, read and understand simple pictures, posters, signboards and traffic signals, and actively participate in community programs with his/her opinion. Being able to tell the time by looking at the clock, telling the date by looking at the wall calendar, and being able to fill in bank vouchers and use checks are indicators of literacy. There is a provision that literacy can be declared if 50 percent of these indicators are met.
