The Chinese border at Upper Dolpa will be opened this year as well. The checkpoint, which was opened only last year after the Covid-19 epidemic, will be opened this year as well.
Assistant Chief District Officer Damodar Gyawali informed that Morimla Naka, which has been used by Upper Dolpavasi since the past, will be opened from 25th of July this year. He also said that preparations are being made to mobilize the Nepal Police and the Armed Police to prevent various types of criminal activities that reach the border.
According to him, there are demands for security from upper Dolpa municipalities, Yarsagumba traders also demand, accordingly, security personnel will be deployed from the district.
'So far, two thousand two hundred border entry passes have been issued from the district administration office,' he said.
According to Pemma Wangchen Gurung, Vice Chairman of She-Foksundo Rural Municipality, the date was decided only after discussions with the authorities of Dongba Province under Sigatche County in China regarding the opening of the checkpoint.
Last year, the checkpoint was opened for 15 days from July 17, while this year it will be operated for 20 days, Vice President Gurung said.
Upper Dolpavasi buy daily consumables, clothes, various machinery materials from Morimla crossing which has been opened since the past.
Upper Dolpa is geographically difficult, so the transportation costs are expensive when buying Nepalese goods, so the people of Upper Dolpa buy Chinese materials at cheap prices for years.
Upper Dolpa residents buy only Chinese materials every year and because there are no commercially produced materials to sell to China, millions of rupees go to the Chinese market every year.
In the border area, Chinese merchants temporarily put up big tents and keep the goods for sale and distribution.
Currently, the herb exported from Nepal is Yarsagumba. Dolpali yarsagumba traders reach the Chinese border to sell the yarsagumba they have collected in the Chinese market.
In Dolpa, good yarsagumba is now fetching up to Rs 30 lakh per kg, traders say.
Morimla crossing is a temporary and open crossing. During the opening of the border, there will be a trade fair in the Chinese area.
Upper Dolpa is still not connected to the national road network, so people have to walk to and fro and have to carry daily necessities and other materials on khachds, yaks, chauris.
She-Foksundo, Dolpobuddha and Charka Tangsong are three local levels in upper Dolpa.
