A siren has been installed in the Lower Parseni of Birendranagar Municipality-9 in Surkhet to give early warning of floods.
Targeting the lower coastal area of Ward No. 9 and 2 of Birendranagar Municipality, the municipality has installed remote-operated sirens.
Siren has been installed targeting 63 households in that area, Yamalal Giri, head of the emergency operation center under the environment and disaster management branch of the municipality informed. In this ward, there is an outlet river from which all the water of Birendranagar goes out. Municipalities 9 and 2 are at high risk of flooding.
As soon as the water in the outlet river passes the danger point, the siren that informs the flood will also sound an 'alert' in the municipal office. Giri said that this will help in the mobilization of rescue materials from the office. According to him, the installed siren will sound to citizens up to a distance of 5 kilometers. This area is more flooded during the rainy season . He said that sirens have been installed in high-risk areas.
Gita Khan, president of the Inclusive Toll Development Association, said that the villagers felt safe with the siren connection. According to him, there is a danger of flooding even during normal rains as the settlements are surrounded by canals. She said that she felt safe as sirens were installed and safety jackets were distributed. 3 people of this village lost their lives due to the flood of 2071.
VHF set, mobile set and emergency number 101 have also been used to effectively implement communication according to the information flow and disaster management mechanism of the municipality.
According to Giri, head of the emergency operation center, embankments have been constructed to control river erosion in Itramkhola, Anpkholi, Lower Parseni of Birendranagar. The municipality claims that the embankment made by bio-engineering method in Aampdali has become effective. It is said that more than 200 households have benefited after the construction of embankment in Itram river. In the year 2071, 9 houses were displaced due to the erosion of the river.
