The locals of Tilagufa have committed to run a campaign with interest in controlling and protecting the poaching of Habre (Red Panda). The municipality has committed to the protection of the endangered red panda, which is listed as a protected wild animal by the CITES Convention.
Mayor Shankar Prasad Upadhyay said that a special conservation plan will be made by controlling theft and extraction in Ruru, Ratada and Pug areas of Tilagufa municipality, which is the main habitat of red pandas. "All communities, including the city government, should be active in the protection of the endangered red panda," he said in a program held at the municipal center in Galje on Friday. Tourism should be promoted by declaring red panda protected areas in Tilagufa, Khandachakra, Mahabai and Shubhakalika areas.' He suggested that information about the important flora and fauna found in the city should be reported to the municipality.
It is estimated that there are 30 to 40 red pandas in Ruru Banchu of Tilagufa and Mahadev of Ratada, Kailash Community Forest of Bhattadi. Dilip Kumar Shahi, manager of Hurendek Nepal, a human rights and environmental development center active in red panda conservation, said that it is estimated that there may be 15 to 20 hares in the forests of Mahabai and Shubkalika. According to him, since 2018 in Calikot, group formation, training, forest patrol etc. have been working for red panda conservation in Hurendek and Himalayan community resource development forest areas. Jagdish Koirala of Tilagufa-9, who is active in red panda conservation, informed that the sheep farmers, farmers, community forest users of Ratada, Ruru areas here are united in red panda conservation.
Mun Bahadur Thapa Munal, Ward President of Tilagufa-10, said that after foreigners and natives started inquiring to study the red panda, the locals came together to save the habitat of the red panda. He said that the local people have done the work of preventing fires in the protected area, planting trees regularly, stopping deforestation and protecting the red panda's habitat.
Nigalo, Dhupi, Ghodapangar, Chuk, Katheokhar, Khasru, Sallo, Jhulo, Bhojapatra and Thingo plants have been planted for the red panda's habitat. A pond has been built inside the forest. City deputy chief Mahendra Bahadur Shahi said, 'We are excited to find the habitat of the rare red panda near the settlement. Its protection is necessary. We have started researching what can be done to protect the red panda's habitat.'
Tul Bahadur Bohora, Ward President of Tilagufa-2, said that the general public will be alerted, those who cut down the forest will be asked for an explanation at the community level, and fines will be set if they do not comply with the damage.
Seeing the community's passion for red pandas, Red Panda Network Kathmandu and Hurendek Nepal and HRDC Calikot have implemented a community-based habre conservation project in those areas.
Daman Sanjyal of the Division Forest Office informed that preparations are being made to install CCTV cameras in the Ruru forest area to monitor red pandas from August.
