The hailstorm that fell on Wednesday morning has damaged the vegetables planted commercially by the farmers of Kapurkot Rural Municipality Ward No. 1, 2, 5 of the district on about 1000 plants. The heavy hail that accompanied the rains has damaged the vegetable plants planted by the farmers and the beds for planting.
250 farmers of Ward No. 1 Sarpani, Ward No. 2 Garpa and Ward No. 5 Sallam, who were earning between 8 to 10 lakhs annually by selling vegetables, were affected by the hailstorm. Farmers are worried about how to earn a living after the destruction of vegetable crops, which are the main source of income.
Kapurkot Rural Municipality has prepared to collect the details of the damage after the hail storm caused damage to the vegetables planted by the farmers. Pradeep Basnet of Kapurkot Rural Municipality-5, Sallam, said that the hail, which fell heavily along with the rain, destroyed the cauliflower he had planted on 10 plants of land. He informed that due to the hailstorm, after all the leaves were gone, only the stalks of cauliflower were left in the field and even the fruit was useless. He was earning up to 10 lakhs annually by selling cabbages and beans. It made household expenses very easy. After the hail destroyed all the crops, I am worried about how to feed my family," he said. Cauli was destroyed by hail and he has requested the concerned authorities for compensation.
Hail has damaged all vegetables such as tomatoes, bell peppers, beans, and other vegetables that have started to grow in their garden. 1 Sarpani farmer Ujarsingh Pun said. He informed that due to the hail, no plants were standing upright, they were broken in the middle and all the fruits and flowers were destroyed. It cost more than one lakh to plant vegetables by spending seeds, planting, fertilizer and labour. Now a plant is not moving when it is growing," he said, "by taking care of a family of five/six people, 2.4 lakhs would have been saved, all of it has been lost."
Balaram Khadka, Ward President of Ward No. 1, said that 80/90 farmers of the ward were completely affected when they made vegetable shacks damaged by hail. He informed that the details of the damage caused by the hail were being collected. He said that it is estimated that after the destruction of vegetable plants, the damage may be more than 25/30 lakhs in the ward.
Kapurkot rural municipality vice chairman Prakash Bhandari said that the hail damaged the vegetables planted by farmers in about 1000 plants of land in three wards. He said that preparations are being made for on-site study and collection of damage details after damaging the unseasonal vegetables that have started to bloom. He says that the amount of damage will be known only from the on-site study .
According to him, Kapurkot rural municipality is known throughout the country for its seasonal vegetables. More than 4,000 farmers of the municipality are engaged in off-season vegetable cultivation and they are exporting vegetables worth more than 400 million per year. Vegetables are the main source of income for farmers. Farmers are very affected after the hail damage to the vegetables. He said that the municipality will take the initiative to provide compensation to the farmers from the on-site study.
