Hima Rural Municipality of Jumla has been declared child marriage free. With the declaration of Hima-6 ward as child marriage free, all the wards have become child marriage free.
The people of Himavasi have made a commitment not to marry children and not to allow child marriages to take place. Hima, which has been experiencing the complex problem of child marriage for some time, is declaring itself child marriage free in the near future. Chairman Lakshman Bahadur Shahi said, "All the wards within the municipality have been freed from child marriage." Now the municipality is preparing to be free from child marriage by completing the required guidelines at the municipal level.'
'Until a few years ago, more than 70 percent of child marriages were taking place in Hima,' said Lakshman Bahadur Shahi, chairman of the rural municipality, 'now the parents are aware. Teenagers are knowledgeable. That is why it has dropped to zero.'
Himavasi are now boycotting child marriage. 'They neither do child marriages nor allow child marriages to take place,' he said, 'instead they want to remove child marriage from their thoughts forever by spreading awareness.' Young people are guilty. Teenagers are spreading awareness to stop child marriage. Mother groups, religious leaders, priests and even elders are aware of the harm caused by child marriage.
'Child marriage was rampant due to illiteracy, poverty, social customs and abuse of technology,' President Shahi said, 'Child marriages are not found after spreading public awareness about the socially harmful practice.' There were also many who became mothers before the age of 20. Now their physical condition is critical. "Poverty is increasing," he said, "After seeing these effects firsthand, teenagers are trying to prevent child marriage."
People's representatives, youth clubs, women's groups organized the vigil. Deprivation of government services and boycotting of marriages were carried out for those who caused child marriages. The rural municipality has given a formal letter of declaration to every child marriage-free ward.
