Three hundred households in Ward No. 1 of Tripurasundari Municipality of Dolpa have been without electricity for two days. This problem has arisen after the machine used in Chalgard small hydropower project broke down.
The hydropower, which was built 18 years ago with the help of the World Wildlife Fund, is now running through the local consumer committee. Tripurakot market, which is the center of the municipality, has been affected by the absence of lights in the daily life. During the night, the locals are forced to drive away the darkness by lighting lamps from cooking oil. Moti Prasad Hamal, an employee of the
project, said that suddenly the machine's bearing broke down and the electricity service was disrupted. He said that the damaged equipment should be procured from Butwal but the committee does not have the money for that and said, 'We don't know how long the darkness will last.'
Dil Bahadur Bisht, chairman of the management committee of the Chalgard Small Hydropower Project, said that he is coordinating with the municipality because there is no money in the committee's account. He said, "Earlier, they used to take out loans from people and bring damaged goods and light the lamps. I haven't paid the money before, who should I tell now?'
