A fire broke out in Salleri Community Forest located in Bangad Kupinde Municipality-4 Dopke a few days ago. The fire damaged 150 hectares of forest. Even when the fire in the forest put the nearby settlements at risk, the security personnel and local consumers spent three days filling the apples and brought the fire in the forest under control.
Similarly, a fire broke out in Kalche Salleri Community Forest near Chhatreswari Rural Municipality-1 Kalche on Saturday. The fire burnt down the houses of the locals and some more houses were at risk. Locals, public representatives and security personnel could not extinguish the fire easily due to windy conditions and steep terrain. The fire destroyed 80 hectares of forest. On Sunday, security personnel used swatters and water bags to control the fire, while local consumers used apples from the forest as an alternative. Locals and security personnel who could not control the fire in the forest on Saturday took two days to control the fire in the forest.
There is a daily fire in Salleri Forest of the district. Since last February of this year, more than two dozen community forests have been affected by fire, and more than one thousand hectares of plants and other things have been destroyed. Some houses are burning and some livestock have also died. Due to the fire, one person has died and some civilians have been injured.
Every day when there is a fire in the forest, the locals, users of the community forest, security personnel have been relying on apples to put out the fire in the forest. As the related agencies have not yet been able to purchase fire extinguishers and have not been able to provide enough tools and equipment to control the fire, the local consumers and security personnel have been relying on apples to extinguish the forest fires.
Consumer Sher Bahadur Gharti said that a fire broke out in the Laligoonras community forest located in Chhatreswari rural municipality-1 a few days ago as the fire that broke out in the nearby forest spread. He said that even though there are fires in the forest every year, even the local level could not buy the tools used to put out the fire, so they had to use apples at the risk of their lives. "We have been requesting tools from various related agencies through community forests and wards, but no one has helped," he said.
Bhubaneswari Community Forest of Sharada Municipality-11 Hiwalcha had a fire at the end of March and since there were no resources to put it out, all the houses around the forest were saved and then they left it like that, said Raju Nepali. He informed that the fire has damaged an area of more than 50 hectares as it is a steep place and could not go without risking life.
Police Inspector Resham Bahadur Khatri of District Police Office Salyan says that there are many problems because the security personnel do not have enough fire extinguishers and even if they have, it is not possible to put out the fire in the forest. He says that the meeting of the disaster management committee has agreed to buy fire extinguishers and other materials with the financial support of the local level. Last month, a fire broke out in a festival held in Sharada Municipality-1 Srinagar of the district. As there was no fire engine, it was not possible to extinguish the fire with water carried in a bucket. Millions of dollars were lost,' he said, 'if there was a fire engine in the district, there would not have been so much damage.'
President of Community Forest Federation Salyan, Purushottam Bhattarai, said that despite knowing that Salyan is at a high risk of fire, forest fires are breaking out due to negligence of locals and the problem is increasing because the concerned agencies are unable to take action against those who set fires. He informed that every year there is a fire in the forest and it is not only a human loss but also a loss of money. However, due to lack of attention from local level and related agencies in purchasing necessary equipment and tools, consumers are forced to use apples to extinguish the fire in most places.
Lalitjung Khadka, Information Officer of Division Forest Office, Salyan, said that since last February, more than two dozen community forests in the district have been burnt and more than 1,000 hectares of forests have been damaged. He informed that the office purchased various tools to control the fire and provided them to the sub-division and security personnel, but they were not enough, so the local consumers had to use apples to control the fire. "Since the office alone cannot do anything to control forest fires, it is necessary for the local level and community forests to show interest," he said. He said that in order to prevent fires and house fires, it was agreed to purchase fire extinguishers and various tools in the meeting of the disaster management committee and fire control committees have been formed in each municipality together with the local level and community forest.
