A linguistic and mathematical conference has been held in Karnali. The conference was organized in Karnali when the basic linguistic and mathematical skills of the students are weak.

Various learning test evaluations have indicated that most of the students could not achieve the learning achievement determined in the curriculum.

Basic linguistic and mathematical skills have a significant impact on a student's educational journey. Its lack has a negative impact on students' active participation in academic activities, presentations, involvement in creative expression, and students' self-confidence and motivation to learn. However, learning this skill among students is weak.

Based on the fact that the basic linguistic and mathematical skills of the students are weak, a conference on basic linguistic and mathematical skills has been organized in Karnali. The purpose of the conference is to discuss and inform about the importance of basic linguistic and mathematical skills and learning test results, and to present good practices focused on skill improvement.

The conference was organized by the Ministry of Social Development of Karnali Province Government with the support of Street Child of Nepal, Asman Nepal.

It is said that the conference was organized with the aim of providing information about the learning level-based teaching method (TRAL) strategy, implementation process, adaptation and adopted methods and to motivate the provincial and local governments and stakeholders on the mobilization of resources and the prioritization and expansion of activities related to basic linguistic and mathematical skills.

According to the 2020 National Test of Student Achievement (NASA)-2020 report, only 8.41 percent of students have achieved the required level or grade of learning skills. The report shows that 10 percent of the students could not read a single word correctly. According to the Class 8-NASA report 2020, 32.1% of students in mathematics, 37.7% in science, 58.8% in Nepali and 51.5% in English have passed the basic proficiency level.

The learning achievement of most students is poor. Only limited students have achieved learning efficiency. It is difficult to improve the level of learning because students cannot pay attention to basic learning. This has increased the dropout rate.

According to Nim Bahadur KC, President of Village Federation of Karnali, due to the old curriculum, lack of learning materials that connect with technology, mismatch of teacher positions and the traditional style of developing teachers' ability, students' learning has become weak. According to KC, the teaching and learning method should be adopted in the era of changing technology.

Tukaraj Adhikari, Director of Education and Human Resource Development Center, said that if the investment in education and effective implementation of learning methods can be strengthened, the learning level of students will improve.

Suvarnakumar Khadka, head of the Educational Development Division of the Ministry of Social Development, said that basic linguistic and mathematical skills are weak among students. He says that the main challenge is the traditional teacher training system.

'Student-centered teaching and learning methods are now needed to improve the level of learning,' he said, 'Rather than planning to improve the learning level of students, plans such as fields, building construction, maintenance, fencing are being demanded at the school level.'

Maina Vick, the vice-principal of Gurvakot Municipality, said that the weak learning level of the students is the weakness of the teachers. "From the parents to the policy-making level, we have to think seriously about this matter, there is also a problem of not having teachers according to the posts in all the schools," said Vice Principal Vick.

With the aim of supporting the implementation of the Learning Supplementation and Rapid Learning Plan created under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Kshitij Basnet, Country Director of Street Child of Nepal, said that learning supplementation activities were conducted with the goal of improving the basic linguistic and mathematical skills of students from classes 3 to 5 by implementing the teaching method according to the learning level.

Through these efforts, the project aims to promote quality and accessible education and help in long-term, systemic change.  Country Director Basnet says that the

project will provide support to more than 36,000 children of 600 community schools in Karnali and Madhesh provinces and help develop the capacity of 1,800 teachers. He said that the main objective of the project is to implement student-centered learning methods to improve or supplement basic learning, to help students' learning by developing the capacity of school teachers, and to advocate for long-term quality learning based on facts.
