Shrinking Kupinde Lake, conservation plan not effective

Kupinde Lake known as Mini Rara in Bangad Kupinde Municipality-8 of Salyan is shrinking. The effect of the spring is drying up due to the stones and mud that fell down during the unorganized digging of the road, and the garbage washed away by the flood during the rainy season.

To save the lake from overflowing, construction of a dam has been done from time to time in Khare, but it has not been effective. Due to which the lake is at high risk.

Kul Bahadur Puri, Chairman of Ward 8, said that two decades ago, water could be seen up to the temple for twelve months in Kupinde Lake, but now there is water up to the temple premises only when there is heavy rain. He said that the water level has decreased by a few meters compared to last year as there was not much rain this year in the rains and winters.

'In the past, the lake was being buried by the haphazard construction of roads and the stones and mud washed away by the rivers all around. Two years ago, after the division forest office built a dam all around, most of the waste that is carried away by the flood during the rainy season has been prevented from going into the lake. In the place where water used to be, now the locals have run a mobile shop and the car has become a parking lot.'

Bangad Kupinde-8 Jamire, 65-year-old Chabilal Pariyar, who is currently living in a house about one kilometer above the lake, expressed his concern that the lake, where water could be seen all around until two decades ago, is drying up. "The place where there was water earlier has now turned into a place where tourists stay and eat picnics," he said. Now the water level has decreased compared to before.' He says that the structures that were not effective and were built to make it easier for tourists to stay have been destroyed.

The municipality charges 15 per person from tourists and 100 from foreigners. Bir Bahadur Roka, a local, says that although they have been collecting 20 to 100 fees from the means of transport, they have not shown much interest in lake conservation. Although there is a committee for lake protection, it is inactive. We don't even know where the president is now,' he said, 'The lake has now become a source of income for a certain person.'

Based on the water level, the length of the lake was 1,200 meters, width 250 meters and depth 51 meters.

Tek Bahadur Rawal, Head of Division Forest Office Salyan, said that although it is estimated that the water level has decreased in about 2 hectares of the lake spread over an area of 30 hectares, there is no official data. According to him, the main reason for the shrinking of the lake is the drying up of the spring due to climate change and the garbage brought by the Khare. According to him, two years ago, Division Forest Office Salyan had constructed dams at different places of two rivers with a subsidy of 40 lakhs to protect the lake.

During the rainy season, the mud and stone dam brought by the river has prevented it from going to the lake . Rawal said that the office will measure this year to find out how much the area of the lake has shrunk. He said that not only Kupinde Lake, but also Kuchuwa Lake in Kalimati Rural Municipality, wetlands in various places of the district are drying up.

Engineer Mahesh Devkota of Bangad Kupinde Municipality said that while doing DPR for lake protection and various structures, the water level in the lake has decreased a lot. He says that due to lack of sufficient budget, there is a problem in doing more lake protection work.
