63-year-old Bharatnath Yogi of Bagchaur Municipality-9 Dangigaon sold oranges worth 3.5 lakhs last year. This year too, he aims to sell around the same amount of oranges.
He has been engaged in orange cultivation since 2044. He is cultivating oranges by planting 1000 plants on 45 acres of land near his home. 57-year-old Girdal Dangi, who has cultivated oranges commercially on 28 plantations since 2042, sold 1.8 million worth of oranges from the orchard last year. This year, he has given the contract to the contractor for 2.2 million.
He has been earning 18 to 20 lakhs annually by selling oranges. His sons and daughters are living in Japan with the money earned from oranges.
Not only these two, Bagchaur Municipality-8/9 Kotmaula is considered as a pocket area of orange production in the district. The main occupation of farmers here is oranges. More than 500 locals are engaged in the orange production business by making gardens at their homes.
A family has been earning from 15 to 35 lakhs by selling oranges. Not only that, they have been exporting oranges worth more than 12 crores from Kotmoula. Kotmoula residents have not only become millionaires, but the face of the whole village has changed after starting commercial orange farming in Pakho land where corn and wheat crops are grown.
All the farmers of Kotmoula, who have been engaged in orange farming since the fiscal year 2043/044 and commercially since 2050, were always forced to go to Kalapahad in India for labor when they could not eat from food crops for twelve months in the past . All year round, when there is a problem of paying bills, they have to work and take out loans from moneylenders to support their household expenses, now they have got jobs at home.
After starting to bring in lakhs of money annually from one house, not only jobs but also real estate, cars have been added and they have given higher education to their children . They have made the house in the village attractive. They have built a road leading to the house. Farmers who were looking for work in the past are now employing four/five people and have been able to invest loans to others .
The farmer Bharatnath Yogi, who has been earning between 28 and 35 lakhs annually, said that the face of not only himself but also the villagers has changed from orange farming. Chief Ramprasad Pulami, who came to Agriculture Development Office in Salyan in 2044, informed that it is a good place for orange production and he encouraged planting orange trees.
After being encouraged by Pulami, the head of the agriculture office, I planted orange seedlings brought from Shimla on the land used for home cultivation while working in the health office. After planting the orange plants, the father had uprooted them and threw them away saying that they would have to starve. I brought the same plants and planted them again and kept on adding . Now the result has been achieved,'' he said. I have easily educated my children with the income earned by selling oranges. I have attached land. I fixed the house . I have employed 10 to 12 people annually. I have invested some money in business.
Lok Bahadur Dangi, the leader of CPN Samajwadi, who was earning up to 20 lakh rupees annually by selling oranges, said that he was doing business with the money he earned and fixed up his house in the village. He informed that the money earned from the oranges paid the debts incurred in the past. "In the past, due to the problem of unemployment, I also went to various places in India for work after it was difficult to meet household expenses," he said, "I returned from there and joined politics." Even now, I am cultivating oranges along with politics. With the money earned every year, all the problems of the house have been solved.'
Yagya Bahadur Dangi, Ward President of Bagchaur Municipality-9, said that Kotmoula residents, who were struggling to meet their household expenses for three months in the past, started commercial orange farming and said that everyone's standard of living has improved a lot . He informed that with the money earned from oranges, every farmer has added a lot of property and arranged his house. According to him, the local farmers who built orange gardens in their homes have also given employment to others in the settlement. He said that the farmers are in trouble due to the outbreak of various diseases in Belobala recently.
Agricultural Development Office Salyan Information Officer Ishwarinarayan Gharti said that while farmers across the district have cultivated oranges on more than 1,800 hectares, only 500 hectares of oranges have been cultivated in Kotmoula of Bagchaur Municipality.
From Kotmoula of Bagchaur Municipality, 120 million worth of oranges were exported till last year, he informed that this year's production is good and will reach around 150 million. According to him, last year oranges worth 29 crores were exported from all over the district and this year it will reach 35 crores.
