The Nepal Medical Council has instructed doctors not to prescribe medicines without testing through social media.

The council says that irresponsible and unscientific information and advice circulating through social media can mislead the general public. The council has requested doctors not to do so as there is a high possibility of serious damage to health due to the use of incorrect medicines.

The council's registrar, Dr. Satish Kumar Dev, has issued an urgent notice and directed to immediately stop prescribing medicines without testing through social media such as TikTok, Instagram and Facebook.

The council has also urged not to broadcast health-related audiovisual content through social media in the name of 'online consultation'.

'As irresponsible and unscientific information and advice mislead the general public and there is a high possibility of serious harm to health due to the use of incorrect medicines, the Nepal Medical Council wishes to inform all concerned doctors and health workers as follows,' the notice issued states.

The Council has requested patients not to use medicines based on unverified advice seen on social media and to take medicines only in consultation with qualified and registered doctors.

- If there is a situation where video content related to the patient is not to be made public, the patient's face and identity should not be revealed.

- Immediately stop prescribing medicines without testing through social media.

- Fully comply with scientific basis, proven facts and professional code of conduct when providing any health-related information or advice.
