The collaboration between Patan Institute of Health Sciences and the Oxford Vaccine Group, Oxford University, UK has reached 20 years. On the occasion, a scientific symposium and a program to review and exchange achievements of two decades of collaboration in child health research were organized and concluded on Wednesday.
The event showcased two decades of scientific partnerships, community engagement, and contributions to global health.
The event was attended by representatives of the World Health Organization, senior colleagues from the Oxford Vaccine Group, the Chair of the National Vaccine Advisory Committee, doctors from major hospitals, members of the Nepal Pediatric Society, and representatives from government, non-governmental, and international partner organizations.
Speaking at the event, Minister for Health and Population Dr. Sudha Sharma said that the ministry is continuously discussing ways to make the health insurance system effective and that it will be effective soon. She also said that since patients are still unable to speak openly about mental health issues, their voices should be heard and supported.
Lalitpur Metropolitan City Mayor Chiribabu Marahajan said that the metropolis is supporting Patan Hospital and will continue to support it in the coming days.
Dr. Kate O'Brien, Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Department of Vaccines and Biologicals, also delivered a speech about the global contribution of the collaboration through a video message. Similarly, the WHO Representative in Nepal, the Chairman of the National Vaccine Advisory Committee, the Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City, and the Minister of Health and Population also presented their views at the event.
More than 30 scientists and researchers from the UK, US, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Uganda participated in the event. The Foundation stated that the participation of all reflected the national importance of the collaboration and its contribution to Nepal's public health.
The results of various research projects conducted by the Patan Health Research Department were presented during the one-day scientific sessions.
The Department of Child Health Research under Patan Hospital was established in 2005 by the late Prof. Dr. Neelam Adhikari with the Oxford Vaccine Group of the University of Oxford. Professor Sir Andrew J. Pollard and Prof. Dr. David Murdoch played a special role in this. Currently, Professor Sirjana Shrestha is leading the research department. The Foundation also presented major studies that have contributed to policy formulation at the event.
The two-decade collaboration between the foundation and the Oxford Vaccine Group has taken pediatric infectious disease research to new heights, strengthened research infrastructure in Nepal, and made a significant contribution to global vaccination policy, the foundation said.
