Grande International Hospital has become the first hospital in Nepal to be recognized by the World Stroke Organization as an 'Advanced Stroke Center', a high-tech stroke treatment center.

The World Stroke Center (WSO) has awarded the recognition to Grande Hospital on Friday based on international standards after evaluating its quality services.

Informing that stroke is the leading cause of death and physical disability worldwide, one person in Nepal suffers from a stroke every 10 minutes, said Dr. Raju Poudel, a neurologist and director of stroke treatment. According to Poudel, one person suffers from a stroke every four seconds worldwide.

He said that such problems have increased significantly in developing countries like Nepal and the situation is alarming. ‘If we look at it globally, the number of people suffering from strokes has increased significantly. In developed countries, it seems that the 70/75 year old group is suffering from this problem. In developing countries like Nepal, it seems that the youth are suffering,’ he said. ‘If stroke is treated on time, it can save the patient’s life and prevent disability.’ In Nepal, there are many problems that occur after a heart problem and then a blood clot affects the brain. Poudel said that the government should make good arrangements for hospitals in every province for stroke treatment.

According to Dr. Subash Phuyal, a neurointervention radiologist at the hospital, every moment is important when treating a stroke patient. He informed that the hospital will help patients across Nepal to receive international-level stroke treatment at home.

Dr. Binod Bijukchhe, director of the hospital, said that the hospital is continuously committed to developing neurological treatment in Nepal, meeting the highest international standards for stroke treatment and patient care.
