Among those infected with Japanese encephalitis (JE), 31.25 percent died in Chitwan. In the details released by the public health office of Bharatpur on Friday, it is mentioned that a total of 16 people have been infected with JE in the district, out of which five have died. It was estimated that up to 30 percent of those infected with JE would die, but in Chitwan, this number is slightly higher.
Public Health Office Vector (Kit) Control Inspector Ram KC said that the number of people infected by August 20 has reached 16. He informed that after one of those infected died on August 21, the number of deaths from JE has reached five in this financial year since July.
He said, 'We have sent the sample to Kathmandu but the test report has not arrived since August 20. Among those who have already been confirmed infected, no one has died since August 21.'
In Chitwan, six people have been infected in Bharatpur Metropolitan Municipality, four in Khairhani, one each in Madi and Ratnanagar Municipalities, and two each in Rapti and Kalika Municipalities. Among the infected, two each from Bharatpur and Rapti and one person from Kalika Municipality have died.

Japanese encephalitis virus infects the brain, which is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. Common symptoms of infection include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and weakness.
Fever over 102 degrees, severe headache, body tremors, semi-consciousness or unconsciousness, body weakness or paralysis and coma are serious symptoms . The Family Welfare Division has mentioned that in severe cases, brain damage and up to 30 percent of deaths occur.
JE is transmitted by the bite of Culex mosquitoes, which are more active at dusk and early morning. The risk is higher around paddy fields, stagnant water, waterlogging areas and around pig and duck farms . Therefore, Vector Control Inspector Ram KC has suggested to control mosquitoes and avoid bites. He said that there is a need to increase vigilance as there is a risk of JE till the month of October.
