Cholera infection has spread at the community level in Birgunj metropolitan area, but the source of cholera has not been identified yet. Cholera-infected patients have been found in different wards of Birganj since last Friday.
Jaymod Thakur, Public Health Officer of Health Office Parsa informed that 79 cholera infected patients have been found in Birganj so far. "Until 8:00 pm on Sunday, 71 people infected with cholera were found," he said, "until Monday morning, eight more people were found infected with cholera."
So far 103 people have been admitted to different hospitals and are being treated. 'The main source of cholera has not been discovered yet,' he said, 'Representatives including the World Health Organization have been testing the water here since Sunday. We hope to identify the source of cholera by today.'
Narayani Hospital Birgunj spokesperson Dr. Udayanarayan Singh informed that 30 patients have been admitted to the hospital till Sunday. "There is a shortage of both beds and manpower for the treatment of cholera in Narayani Hospital," he said. So far, even though they have helped with the paper process, the manpower and other treatment materials that are actually needed have not arrived.'
Spokesperson Singh complained that along with the cholera epidemic, the pressure of other types of patients is also unbearable. 'We are also fighting other types of epidemics apart from this epidemic. Snakebites are common. Despite the high number of patients with fever and paralysis, it is difficult to manage due to lack of manpower,' he said. But the hospital currently lacks both internal and external support.'
Spokesperson Singh informed that the representative of the World Health Organization has come to Birganj and is doing the necessary work including water testing, so the preliminary report of the source of cholera may come today. Cholera infection was found in 26 patients during examination at Narayani Hospital. Similarly, 25 people have been found infected with cholera in Tarai Hospital, nine people in National Medical College and three in Bhawani Hospital.
Similarly eight cholera/cholera infected patients have been found in Birganj Health Care, Ali Ortho Hospital, Mangalam Pathology at the rate of two each. Eight more patients were added on Monday morning, but it was not clear which hospital they were tested in.
