Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has directed the Ministry of Health and Population to prepare an action plan for the reform as soon as possible based on the report of the Health Insurance Reform Suggestion Task Force.
After receiving a briefing about the report and recommendations of the working group today at the Prime Minister's Residence, Baluwatar, Prime Minister Oli said that citizens should be educated with the goal of creating a healthy Nepal and if they fall ill, they should not be in a situation where they cannot afford treatment. He instructed the ministry to come up with an action plan within a week to change the status quo and improve the program to make it practical, as the task force has given suggestions with an objective review of the health insurance program. .
Minister of Health and Population Pradeep Paudel, coordinator of the working group Dr. Shambhu Acharya, members Dr. Lord Koirala, Dr. Raghuram Kafle and member secretary Dr. Saroj Sharma briefed Prime Minister Oli on the need for policy, legal and structural changes in the health insurance program. Currently, about 11 billion rupees are yet to be paid under this program. Currently, 27 percent of the total population is involved in this program and 48 percent of those who are involved have taken the service, the working group has suggested that all citizens should participate in the program and free health services for all citizens below the absolute poverty line. The
task force has suggested to integrate this program with basic healthcare and other social security fund programs. The working group submitted its report to the ministry on January 14th.
