The Ministry of Health and Population has decided to give two lakh rupees to the families who donate human organs after death. Earlier, Health Minister Pradeep Paudel decided to provide Rs 1 lakh to the donor's family and Rs 2 lakh through the human organ transplant center in Bhaktapur.
The Ministry has added 25,000 rupees to the 50,000 rupees given earlier to hospitals that help in organ donation, bringing it to 75,000 rupees. According to the Ministry of Health and Population, the Ministry of Finance has agreed to implement the decision through internal resources.
Health Minister Paudel himself has already announced organ donation after death. Every year, 1,000 people apply for kidney transplants and 55 people apply for liver transplants at the Human Organ Transplantation Center.
According to the existing legal system, those who are not related to living blood cannot donate organs. There is a provision to donate organs after death. Organs donated within 24 hours of death can be transplanted to other living persons.
At present, Bhaktapur's Shahid Dharmabhakta Human Organ Transplantation Center has been transplanting 200 kidneys and 20 livers in the country every year. This is nearly 70 percent of total organ transplants. Along with Veer Hospital, University Teaching Hospital, some private hospitals are also doing organ transplants.
Executive Director of Human Organ Transplantation Center Dr. Pukarchandra Shrestha said that this decision of Health Minister Paudel is positive. 'Thousands of people die brain dead in a year. Eight organs are obtained from one person. Due to various reasons including lack of public awareness, lack of access to hospitals, there are few families who donate. Organ donation not only saves someone's life, but also provides financial support", he said. According to the
center, 10 kidneys and 3 livers have been transplanted from five brain dead patients. Dr. Shrestha informed that preparations are being made for heart and lung transplant as soon as possible. According to him, currently more than 1,000 kidney and 55 liver donors are waiting to be received.
The government has issued the Human Organ Transplantation Regulations, 2073, and has made it possible to transplant the organs of people with brain death into living people.
