The Baglung section of the Kaligandaki Corridor, which had been blocked since the last week of Asar, resumed operation from Friday afternoon.
Since last Sunday, continuous landslides in Belbagar and Chaurikhola of Jaimini Municipality-8 had blocked the road. As repeated landslides occurred in the obstructed corridor, all traffic had come to a halt. With the continuous efforts of Jaimini Municipality, the District Administration, and the Kaligandaki Corridor Project Office, along with the Road Division Office Baglung, the landslide was finally cleared on Friday, allowing vehicles to resume movement.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Rameshwar Twati informed that from Saturday, vehicles heading towards Butwal can operate on this road with caution. The Saljhandi-Dhorpatan road has also been blocked due to landslides since last week. Two days ago, a jeep carrying tourists was also buried by a landslide. All five passengers in the jeep were unharmed.
However, in Belbagar, the risk of further landslides and mudslides remains high. Tourists from Baglung, Myagdi, and Mustang have been increasingly using the corridor route to return to Gulmi, Palpa, and Butwal. The corridor is four hours shorter than the road from Baglung to Butwal via Pokhara and Syangja. Recently, Indian pilgrims and tourists have also started using this road more frequently.
After the road was blocked, vehicles were halted for a week, and then began operating via Phalebas in Parbat, exiting through Mirmi. Transport entrepreneurs said that even on Saturday, some vehicles had purchased tickets to travel on the alternative road.
Deputy Mayor Harihar Sharma said that the large landslide in Chaurikhola has been cleared, and Jaimini Municipality has also facilitated the management of regular removal of mud and stones falling due to continuous rain, allowing vehicles to operate. After the corridor was blocked, residents of Jaimini Municipality, Bareng Rural Municipality, and the Balewa area of Baglung Municipality also faced hardships. The Road Division Office had continuously deployed three JCB machines in coordination with the corridor.
