Marsyangdi Rural Municipality of Lamjung has produced a local textbook for students from basic level grades 1 to 8.
The rural municipality has produced a textbook named ‘Our Marsyangdi’. The textbook, which has been started from the current academic session, was released at a program organized on the occasion of the 21st village assembly on Saturday.
Rural Municipality Chairman Arjun Gurung, Vice Chairman Junamaya Thapa, Chief Administrative Officer Vigyan Poudel and Social Development Committee Coordinator and Ward 7 Ward Chairman Til Bahadur Gurung jointly released the textbook.
Rural Municipality Chairman Gurung said that the textbook has been prepared with the aim of providing practical knowledge to students about local history, geography, culture, natural heritage, tourism, economic activities, local professions, transportation and physical infrastructure, life skills, human value-based education, local dishes and contemporary issues.
According to him, the rural municipality had prepared a local curriculum 4 years ago and started teaching from grades 1 to 5. He said that from the current academic year, the local curriculum has been expanded to grade 8 and a textbook has been prepared accordingly. Currently, 'Our Marsyangdi' is being taught in 55 schools within the rural municipality.
The textbook covers the rural municipality's history, geography, tourist and religious sites, culture, lifestyle, costumes, distinguished personalities, agriculture, forest products, herbs, minerals, natural resources, animal husbandry and local art and culture. The rural municipality believes that this will help students gain knowledge about their own village, society and environment.
According to Chief Administrative Officer Poudel, the book has been prepared as per the standards of the local curriculum based on in-depth study, discussions and suggestions. The book, prepared in collaboration with Bhumidatta Poudel, has been edited by Rishiram Shrestha, Ishwar Babu Pandey and others.
Social Development Committee Coordinator Til Bahadur Gurung said that this effort to connect local knowledge, identity, and pride with school education is a historic achievement for the rural municipality's education sector. Vice President Junamaya Thapa expressed confidence that the textbook will further strengthen the students' sense of pride, belonging, and responsibility towards their own village, society, and culture.
