Lamjung's Besisahar Municipality has provided free sanitary pads to 1,390 girl students of community schools.
There are 14 secondary and 2 basic schools in Besisahar Municipality. There are 45 schools, including primary schools, and sanitary pads have been provided targeting girl students studying in grades 6 to 12. Similarly, this program also covers girl students above the age of 12 studying at the primary school level.
Municipal Assistant Education Officer Srijana Pandey Chiluwal said that this program covers all girl students who are menstruating. According to her, the sanitary pads sent to the school principal are being distributed through the school's gender relations teacher. 'We have been providing 3 packets to each girl student per month,' she said. Each packet contains 8 sanitary pads.
According to Municipal Accounts Officer Srijana Poudel, 10,500 packets of sanitary pads have been purchased for Rs 313,829 under the federal conditional grant for the current academic year 2083. She said that this was purchased under the federal conditional budget.
Before distribution, the samples of sanitary pads received under the procurement process were tested at the municipal office. Gurung, Deputy Mayor, Chief Administrative Officer Suman Adhikari, Education Officer Sundar Khatri, Engineer Sajuma Ghimire, Principal of Janvikas Secondary School Besisahar Deepak Khaniya, Principal of Jankalyan Secondary School Udipur Surya Bahadur Adhikari, Head of the Goods Section Mohan Lamsal, Technical Assistant Sunita Chhetri, and in the presence of media persons, the municipality's Hospital Nursing Inspector Chandani Shrestha and Assistant Education Officer Srijana Pandey Chiluwal tested the samples.
The municipality has stated that during the testing, the size, absorbency, thickness and quality of the pads, the condition of the adhesive, packaging, production and expiration dates, and compliance with health and hygiene standards were tested.
Deputy Mayor Gurung said that the free sanitary pad distribution program has been effectively carried out by keeping in mind the menstrual health of the girls and regular attendance at school. She said that sample tests were conducted before distribution to ensure the quality of the purchased sanitary pads. Suman Adhikari, Chief Administrative Officer of the municipality, said that the process of purchasing an incinerator (a machine for burning sanitary pads) has been initiated for the safe management of used sanitary pads.
