He was involved in agriculture in the village. He started having problems while working in the fields and raising animals. His hands and feet had been rotting for almost 20 years. When he started to smell, his family members did not let him stay inside the house. They also stopped cooking and serving him food.
Tek Bahadur Thapa, 60, of Bhakunde, Baglung Municipality-10, did not get support from his family after suffering this ordeal, and his neighbors did not help him with his treatment. Gradually, he could not stand on his feet. He also started having problems with his hands. After that, his family did not even let him stay inside the house.
The old man, who had been evicted from his home for five years, was kept in a goat shed. Thapa, who could not stay at home, was living a difficult life. When the victim's sister saw the situation when her relatives came, she pleaded with the neighbors, but no one supported her. Then she approached the Baglung Municipality Office.
The city health department sent a notice to the health sector's health project. Sujan Poudel, the monitoring and technical head of the health project run by the Fairmade Foundation and Nepal Gaza Development Foundation, and Raju Khadka, the deputy mayor of the city, reached the village and rescued the patient and took him to Dhaulagiri Hospital. After seeing Thapa's wounds, it was initially suspected that he had leprosy. After he could not be treated at Dhaulagiri Hospital, he was sent to Hiryokharka Hospital in Pokhara.
During treatment in Hiryokharka, it was found that he did not have leprosy. After treatment under the leadership of Dr. Prakash Karki of Hiryokharka Hospital, it was confirmed that this problem was caused by a disease called 'cirrhosis' caused by a bacterial infection.
He has been receiving regular treatment in Hiryokharka since last Jestha 7. After some recovery from the treatment, he was given medicine and returned to the village. Even now, since his family has not allowed him to enter the house, the project has cleaned and made a room in the shed and kept Thapa. Deputy Mayor Raju Khadka informed that the municipality went to his house and gave him a ‘B’ category disability identity card. He has also been provided with some relief money after receiving the identity card.
After taking him to Pokhara for some time and receiving treatment, more than half of the problem will be cured, said Dr. Sandeep KC, a dermatologist at Dhaulagiri Hospital. Initially, he was sent to Pokhara on suspicion of leprosy, but now the wound can be treated at Dhaulagiri Hospital.
Since it will take a long time to recover even though it is a skin disease, the project has also provided food, cooking utensils and clothes to the elderly, Poudel said. The patient said that he felt a lot of relief after recovering somewhat. ‘When I got sick, my neighbors didn’t care, my family didn’t care, I was treated like an animal,’ he said, ‘Even if I got cured, I wouldn’t be able to live with my family anymore.’ He said he managed to survive the death. After not knowing that medicine could cure him, he tried to heal himself by performing pujas. Most people even looked down on him, saying that he was a sinner because he had leprosy.
KC said that after regular treatment and medication, he would be able to walk again. The victim said that he would try to walk after some time if he was on crutches. He said that he had also demanded the project. ‘My rotten leg is slowly growing back, and the wound is also getting clean,’ he said, ‘I have gained the self-confidence that I couldn’t even die, now I will live.’ He said that if he gets cured, he will work and eat.
