Local residents have blocked the operation of goods vehicles for the under-construction Chinokhola Hydropower Project after a truck carrying pipes met with an accident in Khotro, Naso Rural Municipality-3, Manang.

At around 9:15 am on Saturday, the truck (Lu 2 Kha 188) carrying pipes for the project from Rasuwa to Manang fell off the road about 50 meters below the Marsyangdi River while climbing the Khotro hill.

The truck driver, Ganga Lamgati, 32, a resident of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality-3 in Sindhupalchowk, and the truck passenger, Surya Bahadur Gurung, 68, of Naso Rural Municipality-1, were injured in the accident, according to the Manang Police.

The police and locals rescued them and sent them to the provincial hospital in Besisahar, Lamjung, for further treatment via an ambulance from Naso Rural Municipality, according to the District Police Office, Manang.

After the accident, the locals protested that the road was narrow and that accidents were recurring, and stopped the vehicles of the hydropower project, said Ward Chairman Neelram Gurung.

According to him, at least 5 vehicles have been stopped. According to the police, about 20 to 25 locals have gathered and are determined not to allow the project's cargo vehicles to operate until the hydropower project makes the road wider and safer.
