Locals have put forward various demands, including road blacktopping, to the hydropower projects operating in the Ngadikhola corridor on the border of Marsyangdi Rural Municipality-6 and 7 in Lamjung.

The affected local residents submitted a demand letter on Tuesday to the completed and under-construction projects and demanded immediate upgrading and blacktopping of the road from Dobhanchaur to Nainche in Marsyangdi Rural Municipality-6, Upper Ngadi.

A gathering organized in Thulibesi, Marsyangdi-6 on Sunday has formed a 'Ngadikhola Corridor Struggle Committee' with representation from Thulibesi, Nainche, Dahare, Tarachok, Shera and Ludi areas of Ward No. 6 and 7.

Committee coordinator Jhapendra Adhikari said that along with road blacktopping, at least 10 percent water should be released regularly into the river during the dry season, and that priority should be given to the most affected residents of the corridor area out of the 10 percent share allocated to the locals.

According to Raju Gurung, secretary of the Sangharsh Committee, the hydropower companies have not implemented their verbal commitments to upgrade and blacktop the road in the past. The Sangharsh Committee has stated that even though the locals provided land at a low price in the hope of building a paved road, they are now having to travel dangerously due to dust and mud.

The committee has also stated that the obligations as per the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) have not been implemented. The committee has warned that it will launch a phased protest if the demands are not addressed.

The construction of the Nyadi Hydropower Project (30 MW) and the Siuri Khola Hydropower Project (5 MW) has already been completed in the Ngadi Corridor and electricity has been connected to the central transmission line. Hidikhola Hydropower Project (6.82 MW) is in the process of connecting electricity to the central transmission line.

Super Nyadi Hydropower Project (40.27 MW) has reached the final stage. Nyadi Phedi Hydropower Project (21.4 MW) and Lower Nyadi Hydropower Project (12.6 MW) are under construction. Locals have questioned the intentions of the hydropower projects, saying that despite having so many hydropower projects, there is no readiness to upgrade the roads in the main affected areas.

The demand letter submitted by the locals has been conveyed to the Marsyangdi Rural Municipality Office, District Administration Office, District Police Office, Marsyangdi Rural Municipality Ward No. 6 and 7 Offices, Nyadi Hydropower Concerns and Coordination Committee, Super Nyadi Hydropower Concerns and Coordination Committee and the Federation of Nepali Journalists Lamjung Branch.
