With the aim of increasing agricultural production and attracting tourists to the area, Tamankhola Rural Municipality has launched a program to promote apple cultivation in public places. Under this program, 1,500 apple seedlings have been planted in the first phase.

300 seedlings have been planted in Gordi of Sole Community Forest in Tamankhola Rural Municipality Ward No. 4 and 1,200 seedlings have been planted in Baheli of Siddini Community Forest. The seedlings planted last year have now grown. The rural municipality has invested in those places, while the ward office is managing them, said Ward Chairman Chhaprasad Sirpali.

Regular weeding and fertilization work is being done after planting golden apple seedlings brought from Mustang. The municipality has done this work by removing unnecessary bushes and unproductive weeds in public areas at a cost of about 700,000 rupees. Gordi is at an altitude of 2,500 meters, while Baheli is at 3,500 meters. The municipality has a plan to grow apples in hundreds of acres if the yield of apples grown in 20 ropanis is good in the first phase.

The municipality has developed a procedure and cultivated them on community land in the first phase. Even though the rural municipality has cultivated them, the local community will get the income after production. ‘This is also a first-time experiment, if it is successful, we will ask the farmers to plant them individually,’ said the rural municipality chairman Joklal Budha, ‘If apple production can be increased, migration will stop, and farmers will be able to earn income by staying at home.’ Apples have been cultivated at both these altitudes on the advice of agricultural technicians.

The rural municipality has made agricultural production and tourism the basis of prosperity. Potatoes have also been planted in Lamela, Tamangaun, Muthachaur, Kholsewang, Syaula and Narjakhani here. A plan has been made to expand apple cultivation in Soledanda, Barahatal, Bhitarban and Baheli. ‘Local development is possible only if we can increase production and make ourselves self-reliant,’ said Budha, ‘We need an environment where we can earn money even while staying at home to settle in difficult geographical areas.’ As the road from Burtiwang to Taman, Lamela to Sole has been built, it will be easy to send the produce to the market.’

Agriculture Technical Bydhan Bagale said that good apple production can be obtained in this area. He said that the apple trees that will bear fruit in five years have already become good and can bear fruit soon. The agriculture branch is also regularly monitoring the care and medicinal treatment of those plants. He said that apples can be cultivated in the geography above 2,200 meters. He informed that this area was selected as it is useful because it even snows in winter.

Tamankhola has also built an attractive structure on the 2,600-meter Soledanda to attract tourists. A martyrs' park, temple and water collection pond have been built in a place where the Himalayan range is visible. A staircase and railing have been placed to reach here. The rest area built by the tourism office nearby has made it easy to take shelter during the rain. The rural municipality aims to take tourists who come for sightseeing to the apple orchards here. Traditionally, there are some apple trees in Lamela. However, those trees of the local variety have stopped bearing good fruit. Agricultural technicians say that the production of golden apples can be obtained well.
